Life has always been full of trials for every single person in ways that we do or do not realize. Suffering is nothing new. We tend to notice more now because of the selected media coverage.

So come 2005 or 2345, Allah will not test us more than we can bear and Allahs' promises are true.

There is and will always be suffering; a few examples from teh Qur'an alone:

2:155 - And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and crops; but give glad tidings to the steadfast,

9:51 - Say: Naught befalleth us save that which Allah hath decreed for us. He is our Protecting Friend. In Allah let believers put their trust!

21:35 - Every soul must taste of death, and We try you with evil and with good, for ordeal. And unto Us ye will be returned.

There is an inevitable degradation of the state of the Ummah with the departure of a Prophet (pbut). This final degradation will continue until the return of Iesa (pbuh) the arrival of the Mahdi and, of course, the Dajjal.

Suffering is indeed a relative term - are those in Guantanmo suffering more than those who have had their houses burnt down and families raped and killed? Allah (swt) has promised us we will be tried with no more than we can bear - muslims have remained steadfast over the past hundreds of years in awareness of both this and his mercy.

The reason we are in this world is not for this world. We are here for the hereafter and thus work toward it. We overcome any difficulties as best we can - but the acid test is not whether we are skillful enough to overcome all of these.. It is whether we can retain our faith as ultimately all results to actions come from Allah (swt).
