    Dhikr after the Sunna

    Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

    I would like to know what the position of the Hanafi school is regarding (individual) zhikr after the fard prayers when there are sunnah prayers still to be prayed. Should one pray the sunnah's first before doing zhikr or should it be zhikr first?

    Walaikum assalam,

    In the Hanafi school it is best to pray one’s sunnah right after one’s fard prayers, and to do one’s dhikrs after the sunna prayer. Unnecessary worldly talk or activities between the fard and sunna reduce the reward of one’s sunna prayer. [Shurunbulali, Ibn Abidin]

    For several wisdoms, however, some scholars preferred the position of doing one’s post-salat dhikrs before the sunnahs.

    Is there a difference of opinion regarding this i) amongst Hanafis ii) with other madhabs?

    Yes.

    Wassalam,
    Faraz Rabbani

    Elhamdulillah, I read tons on this subject and after that I do Tasbiha after Fard, always, unless if I skip it now & then. And inshaAllah am not changing this until my death. And one of the strongest reasons to glorify Allah right after the Fard is as stated - Sunna prayer is better if performed at home, and also, Fard is Fard, that our obligation, Sunnah is not Fard nor Wajeeb, and obligatory number of Rakah is known (2, 4, 4, 3, 4) starting from Fajr, finishing with Isha, while Witr is Wajeeb.

    After a long period of investigation i noticed that the Hanafi Fuqaha has recorded both methods i.e.;

    Some Fuqaha said that the after salah dhikr&dua must be made directly after the Fard prayer, and others have said it must be done after all prayers (last sunnah prayer after the Fard, or after Witr at Isha, if Witr is to be prayed diractly after Isha)

    It seems that the most well known and practiced method is that the after salah dhikr&dua must be made on completion of all prayers.

    Those who said like; Ibn Hummam, Ibn Abidin, Tahtawi and others have based their opinion on this hadeeth:

    Aishah R.A. said that the Prophet -may Allaah raise his rank- after the taslim in prayer used to sit as long at it takes to say . Allaahumma anta Al-Salaam wa minka Al-Salaam Tabaarakta Yaa Dhaa-l-Jalaali Wa Al-Ikraam."

    And Tahtawi, Haskafi, Ibn Abidin said to remain longer than that will be Makruh.

    And they have reconciled all those other ahadeeth that mention those after salah dhikr&dua to be made after Fard prayers to be done on completion of all prayers, and they have rationalised thereby that if is done on completion of all prayers, it is technically also done after the Fard.

    However there are good reasons to object this opinion;

    The hadeeth used for this opinion seems not be based on this matter, rather it is based that the one who is praying must change his place before offering another prayer like mentioned in other hadeeths telling us to change place for another prayer.

    If it was like they have said; Then basically Nabi SAW must always seated very shortly after ALL prayers.

    This hadeeth makes it aport from that the most granted dua is after fard clear that dhikr was done after fard prayers;

    Imam al-Bukhari narrated from Ibn Abbas under the chapter "Dhikr after prayer" that he said: "In the lifetime of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) it was the custom to recite Allah's Praises aloud after the compulsory congregational prayers'. He also said: 'when I heard the Dhikr, I would learn that the congregational prayer had ended"

    (Imam Nawawi reported that Imam al-Shafi interpreted the Hadith of Ibn Abbas that they used to supplicate aloud only for a short time to teach the way of supplication)
