"Marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one." Al-Qur’an (4:3)

Allah ta'ala created men and women.
He also created their appetites and capabilities.
He also instructed them on their rights and responsibilities.
There are a certain number of rights and responsibilities a capable man can discharge in a day before he gets burnt out.
Through trial and error we would probably come to the figure that Allah ta'ala has worked out for us already.
    Four.

    That's one possible wisdom.
    There are others.
    Alhamdulillah ala kulli haal

Sometimes you just gotta say: This is Taqdeer.

If the questioner was a muslim i would answer in the way Mufti Rafi Usmani did, when he explained the sunnah of the prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam regarding eating with the right hand and starting all sorts of deeds with the right hand/foot.

That is: the greatest wisdom of it is that Allah and his Messenger told us so.
And if he were to ask for a gentle lady in marriage, he would be refused, and when he leaves the world it does not miss him, and if he goes out, his going out is not noticed, and if he falls sick, he is not attended to, and if he dies, he is not accompanied to his grave.

Excellent brother, may Allah Almighty bless you.
If there was any Prophet to come after me, surely would have been Umer (RA). Saying of the Prophet (PBUH).

    salaamualaikum

akhi, all great civilizations before islam, would treat women ridiculously.

Romans for example would have 100's of wives. Many other civlizations as well would have so many.

Allah subhana wa ta'ala put a limit. 4.
And when Imam al-Shafi'i (Rahimullah) reached forty [years of age] he began to walk with a staff, and when questioned about it used to say: "To remind myself that I am a traveller"
