    Exclamation What's up with Mahdi?

    As-salaam u leikum,

okay so I've been wondering for quite some time now. What's up with the whole idea of the coming of the Imam Mahdi? I know some Sunnis who believe in him and some who don't. Im confused, can you help me out? Im a Sunni, so am I supposed to believe in his arrival?

    salam
nothing is up with imam al-mahdi.
    we sunnis await him.
scholars say his arrival is imminent, because this tyrannical rule period is short according to hadith.
some say he is alive - meaning he is young and will become mahdi at some point in the future.

It's just a prophecy like the prophecy about the Tartars, Gog and Magog, etc. It is a prophecy, not a fundamental of faith or a tenet or doctrine. It is simply a prophecy of a future incident, just like so many predictions about the End of Times. Of course we believe in it since it was told to us by the Prophet (s).

    Assalamualikum Brother,

Actually Gog and Magog is mentioned in the Quran, not only in ahadiths.
The Quran refers to Gog & Magog twice in Quran, in 18:94 & 21:96.

    You misunderstood my post.

I was not downplaying the importance of Hadith.

    Assalamualikum,

Really brother.... is that what you thought I believed? That is certainly not true! I was merely trying to highlight the fact that unlike the other prophecies (that you mentioned) which are in ahaadith, Gog and Magog are also mentioned in Quran. Surely, there is more importance here to these creation of Allah's, which one must may heed to.

    wa'salam

Also the coming of Isa (as):

Surah Maryam discusses the death of ‘Isa (as).

Peace be upon me the day I was born, and the day I die and the day I am raised up again alive. (Surah Maryam: 33)
