I agree with both statements. People in general confuse things out of ignorance (let's face it, none of us lacks ignorance), generalization, and simple error.

    You mean like "non-Muslim"?

Actually, that comes up pretty on-topic. I such slang from Allah (IOW is it in the Quran) or is it cultural?

The Christians, for example, would likely call Muslims infidels or heretics or heathens; though I don't think the Bible supports such language.

christianity and islam are similar we have the same beliefs in certain things although islam tends to be more detailed.

There are still debates with regards to the word kafir. some muslim scholars believe that this term doesn't apply to Christians and Jews as they are the people of the book and some do.

Kuffar is a disbeliever and is stated in the Qur'an as being a person who rejects the truth and ignores it even when it is apparent to them.

    assalamu alaikum,

i think a lot of muslims and non muslims dislike the term because of the way it has been used as a derogatory and slandering term. Just to say the word "disbeliever" in english sounds less offensive than the word kuffar. Although if used within the right context i don't think theres anything wrong with the word.I just detest the way some ppl abuse the word and apply it as if it is a swear or something, that's what it has come to. It's a trashing term these days used in pathetic slinging matches when words fail. I prefer to use other terms but each to their own i suppose.

i apologise if it may sound offensive to use the word kafir. i am not using it in such a way that it could be considered a swear word. kafir is used in the Qur'an.

this thread isn't imposed to curse others but just to see the confusion of culture and religion

It isn't offensive. The one who complained about it offending him has probably heard terms being used against us. It's just a reality. You aren't muslim, well then you're a kaafir.

    It isn't offensive.
That can only be determined by the person who hears it and the person who says it. Words themselves have no meaning and no effect... it's only what we people give them.

That particular word appears to be the origin of the (phonetically similar/identical) South-African derogitory slang for black people.

But if the poster intended no disrepect then I, for one, percieve none.
