I suggest if any brother uses a wnk smiley while adressing a sister then he should be hanged.
No more, more less.
Over and Out !

and that post was partly in jest ...
so was just kidding (and no kidding at the same time)
are smilies halal? coz they are animate pictures...
www.harmony3.blogspot.com

Umm, don't opinion about Tasweer differ? and would smilies be considered as just objects rather than trying to immitate god's creation (which as far as I know, is haram according to some scholars)..Smilies wouldnt fall under that category.
from what i have learnt from teachers who have learnt from scholars, everything is halal unless explicity and clearly stated (meaning there is daleel) that something is haram, except for meat and the opposite gender. we can't just label things haram without sound proof. and i'm sure the moderators of sunniforum wouldn't do something haram without knowing it was otherwise. but i know on other forums, if you do not specfy your gender, that sister/brother smilie won't appear besides your name. so maybe try that if you really have a problem with it.....but further research should be done before calling those smilies haram......

Smile :) it's sunnah :)

first of all, pious scholars say that photos on a screen are not considered pictures because they are not static. Even if we take them as pictures, the smilies are really small. We read in fiqh books that if a person is praying and there is such a small picture that you can't make out the face clearly, then that picture is ok and the person's prayer is fine. To determine if it is small or not, if the picture is on the ground and you can't see it clearly standing up, it's ok. If you move away from your screen about six feet, you wont be able to see them clearly, hence they are ok? Many pictures of the Kabah have faces on them but since they are small, it is ok.
can we have a verdict on this from a mufti please?

It is not the fact that we haven't "considered" this fatwa - we have. sunniforum.com went through months of group mashwara before we went live, and the issue of smilies was discussed and the above fatwa by Mufti Desai was considered. But there is ikhtilaaf on the issue, andOriginally Posted by ptw
we have Mufti Yusuf Mullan amongst us here as well as other ulema who have a different opinion from Mufti Desai.
Khair,we will raise the topic again amongst the shura

If you don't like them, or feel uncomfortable seeing them, try user cp -> user options -> Thread Display Options -> Visible Post Elements -> unselect show images.
You may also wish to be aware that all major browsers allow you to fully disable image display (as it's very easy to see images as you navigate the web, all around). You can find this in internet options in internet explorer for example.
As br Saleel indicated, we discussed this fatwa amongst others in the formation of the forum and we decided upon the opinion within the madhab, upon consultation with the scholars that Saleel mentioned, that these images are not prohibited - ie on the computer screen as emoticons.
The views of any one mufti are not necessarily the majority or indeed strongest view - again, as mentioned there is ikhtilaaf on this issue and each of these opinions is valid within the Hanafi madhab at least.
For example, it is permissable to not follow mufti Desai's view that wearing Nike garments is haram as alternative views exist.
Jazakumullah for that advice Br. Mossy.Originally Posted by Mossy
The first advice (User CP->Edit Options->Thread Display Options->Visible Post Elements->unselect show images and click Save Changes) will only hide images in the posts.
The second advice about the internet explorer (Tools->Internet Options->Advanced->Multimedia->unselect Show pictures and click Apply) will hide all the pictures/images on your screen.
For those who have an issue with images/pictures and smilies/emoticons, the second advice of Br. Mossy would be better. I hope the advice of Br. Mossy has helped you out. Sister ptw, we at Sunniforum hope you will enjoy your stay here. : )
