    Wa'alaykummus salaam,

Most people can undergo cupping safely. However it is recommended that the following groups of patients refrain from Hijamah, or at least be considered with caution by a proficient therapist.

    • Children under 10 years of age
    • Adults above 70 years of age
    • Pregnant or menstruating women
    • Patients recovering from surgery
    • Patients with thin skin, particularly apparant in the elderly and undernourished
    • Patients suffering from metastatic cancer
    • Patients with bone fractures
    • Refrain from hijamah over sites with potential underlying DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), ulcers or arteries.

    We hope that is useful.

The size of the cuts are typically very small and very superficial. The aim is not to create large breaks in the skin, but rather small superficial lacerations, through which the blood can easily seep out due to the vaccum created by the cups.

Hijamah is not painful, however one sometimes feels the intense pressure created due to the vaccum itself. For patients who do easily faint or cannot tolerate the mild pain which may be experience (either from the cuts themselves, or due to the vaccum), either dry cupping can be performed instead (no cuts are made) or a local anesthetic can be used (typically a cream).

    Just to add...

Each cup entails approximately 10 superficial cuts. Obviously this number will change according to the size of the cup used. The cuts are usually about 2-5mm in length and only 1-3mm deep. This will depend on the site of administration.

It is improtant to recognise that Hijamah is NOT venesection - ie drawing blood directly from veins. Rather it involves extravasation of tissue fluids from underlying tissue.

    Assalaamu 'alaykum,

It comes in hadith that Nabi (SAW) has encouraged certain times to perform Hijamah (cupping).

Anas ibn Maalik (RA) reported that the Rasulullah (SAW) said: “Whoever wants to perform cupping then let him look for 17th, 19th and 21st…”
    (Saheeh Sunan Ibn Majah, 3486)

Thes above-mentioned dates in fact coincide with the following forthcoming dates this week:

    Thur 12th Feb 2009 - 17 Safar 1430
    Sat 14th Feb 2009 - 19 Safar 1430
    Mon 16th Feb 2009 - 21 Safar 1430

There is of course the chance that these dates may be out by one day, as is sometimes the case with the Islamic lunar calender. Nonetheless, this is an attempt to try and revive the sunnah of Hijamah on the directed dates.

Those interested in having Hijamah performed on the above dates please do contact us early as there will be a first come first serve basis. We will post reminders regarding such dates next month as well insha'allah. Outside these dates, as the above ahadith outline, there are days in any week which are sunnah for cupping and if anyone would like cupping for a particular ailment, they can have that done outside the 17th, 19th and 21st of the Islamic month.

Please also note that the islamic day begins from Maghrib (sunset).
