    Default dua's for protection

In the name of Allah, most gracious , most merciful

In general, the scholars mention that there are three ways to prevent and remove illnesses and troubles from one: medical means, dua, and amulets (ta`wiz) for protection. One should always do the former two (take medical means, and turn to Allah in dua) and use the third (ta`wizes) when the need is felt for them.

One of the most important Qur'anic duas for protection against magic is to recite the Two Surah of Protection (al-Mu’awwadhtayn), namely, Surah Al Nas and Surah Al-Falaq.

Ka`b Ahbar (Allah be pleased with him) says, "If I had not read few words, then the Jews would have made me into a monkey."

    Someone enquired, what are they?

    He said the following:

A’udhu biwajhi hil’adhim alladhi laysa shay’un a’dhmu minhu,wa bikalimatillahi’l tammati’l lati la yujawizuhunna barrun wala fajirun wabi’l asma’illahi’l-Husna ma’ alimtu minha wa malam a’lam min sharri ma khalaq wizran wa birran. ['I seek refuge in the Countenance of Allah, which nothing is more tremendous than, and in His most perfect words which not righteous or sinful man can excel, an in His most beautiful Names, the ones I know and the ones I know not, from the evil of His creation, whether good or bad.']

One should recite this dua morning and afternoon three times. (Reported by Imam Malik)

One should make the following dua if one has hurt another:

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) use to make the following dua:
Allahumma fa’ayyuma mumim sababna aw la’anna faj’al dhalika lahu qurbatan ilaka yawmal qiyam. ['O Allah, any believer we insulted or cursed, make that a way for them to gain closeness to You on the Day of Resurrection.']

There are numerous duas from our Beloved Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and the companions and those who came after them.

(F: We should get a good book of duas, and 'live' the supplications of the Prophet through continual recital of them in all our affairs. Also, see the related post on 'Effective Ta`wizes')

    Jazak Allah

    Default dua's for protection

In the name of Allah , most grcious , most merciful

Mawlana Jalal al-Din al-Rumi (Allah be pleased with him) said:

A sober-minded man said to Jesus,

"What in this existence is hardest to bear?"

"O dear soul," he replied, "the hardest is God's anger,

from which Hell is trembling as we are."

"And what is the protection against God's anger?"

Said Jesus, "To abandon your own anger at once."

    Default protection from fire

It is established from the sunna of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that one should say, "Allahumma ajirni min an-nar," ('O Allah, save me from the Fire!') seven times after Maghrib and Fajr prayers. He told us (Allah bless him and give him peace) that saying it at Maghrib would grant one protection from the Fire if one died at night; and saying it at Fajr would grant one protection from the Fire if one died during the day. [Sunan Abi Dawud]

    And Allah alone gives success.

    Default protection from black magic

Black magic (sihr) is something that definitely exists and causes harm to people. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) was also afflicted with black magic.

A Jew by the name of Labid ibn Asim who outwardly posed to be a believer (munafiq) carried out black magic on the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace). He took the hair of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) and made eleven knots and placed it under a rock in a well called Zarwan. The effect of this was that it created uncertainty in the mind of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) as to whether he had done or not done certain things (although this had no effect on his religious and prophetic obligations). At times the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) felt he had accomplished something yet he had not done so and vice versa. The angel Jibra’il informed the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) as to what had occurred and came down with the two Surahs, namely Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nas. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) together with the Companions (Allah be pleased with them all) went to the well and removed the knotted hair. As each verse was recited, the knots untied miraculously. At the eleventh knot, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) was relieved from the effects of this black magic. (See: Tafisir Ibn Kathir & Ma’arif al-Qur’an)

Thus, scholars mention that the recitation of the Mu’awwazatayn (the two Quls: al-Falaq and al-Nas) is very beneficial in the removing of and protection from black magic. One should make a habit of reciting these especially when retiring to bed and after the Fardh prayers. There are many virtues of these two Surahs mentioned in the Ahadith.

Sayyida A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) narrates that whenever the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) would become ill, he would recite the Mu’awwizat (Surah al-Falaq & Surah an-Nas) and blow over himself. When his illness was aggravated, I used to recite these two Surahs (and blow my breath) over him and make him rub his body with his own hand, for its blessings. (Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 4728)

Apart from these two Surahs, the recitation of Surah al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi, and last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah is also very beneficial.

Moreover, the famous Tibi’i Ka’b al-Ahbar (Allah be pleased with him) states: “Had it not been for the phrases that I recite regularly, the Jews would have turned me into a donkey (m: out of black magic). It was said to him: “What are these phrases?” He replied:

(Transliteration): “A’uzu bi wajhillah al-Adhim alladhi laysa shay’un a’dhamu minhu wa bi kalimatillah at-tammati allati la yujawizuhunna barrun wa la fajir wa bi asmaillah al-husna kulliha ma alimtu minha wa ma lam a’lam min sharri ma khalaqa wa bara’a wa zara’a.”

Translation: “I seek the protection of Allah the Great; He, than whom there is nothing greater. And I seek the protection of the perfect words of Allah which no man, virtuous or evil, can even transcend; and I seek the protection of all the beautiful names of Allah, those of them which I know and those which I do not know, from the evil of everything He (Allah) created, to which He has given existence, and which He has spread (over the earth or universe).”

(Recorded by Imam Malik in his al-Muwatta, 2/541, no. 2737)

Thus, the above supplication can be very beneficial in the removing of the effect of black magic.

Also, the consuming of Ajwa dates has been prescribed by the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) as a remedy for black magic.

Amir ibn Sa’d narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “He who eats seven Ajwa dates every morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on the day he eats them.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 5130)

The above are just some of the methods in removing the effect of black magic that have been prescribed in the Sunnah, thus one may resort to any of them. There are also other remedies besides the above, but time does not allow me to mention them all.

Finally, before parting, I would like to state that undoubtedly black magic is something that exits but it is observed that many people experience some type of downfall or illness and quickly jump to the conclusion that somebody has carried out black magic and start pointing fingers at others. If a child refuses to marry someone whom the parents want him/her to marry, then the parents begin to regard it to be the cause of black magic. Similarly, if the relations of the husband and wife turn sour, the first assumption is that it must be black magic that was carried out by such and such person. Black magic is regarded to be the cause behind every minor and major illness.

This type of understanding is incorrect. One should not be too hasty in concluding that the cause of a problem is black magic, because more often than not, black magic has nothing to do with the problem.

Secondly, due to this, many people have made it a business, in that they deceive people in making them believe that they have some sort of black magic done upon them, thus they are charged with a massive sum for the treatment. People have made thousands in this business.

Thus, one should be very careful in these matters, for in it rests the benefit of this world and the hereafter. Do not be too hasty in determining that the cause behind the problem is black magic. However, if there is substantial evidence such as the sudden break of illness, etc, then one may determine whether it is the cause of black magic or otherwise. And in the case of being afflicted with it, one must primarily turn to Allah Most High and resort to the remedies mentioned in the Qur’an and Sunnah. Also, if the help of others is sought, then one should only turn to those who are god-fearing and pious.

May Allah Most High guide us all towards the right direction, Ameen.

    And Allah knows best.

    Default protection against laziness

    Assalamu alaykum

In the name of Allah the Inspirer of good.

Pray to Allah in the depths of the night from the bottom of your heart. Then try to do things as promptly as possible. Furthermore, plan to do things before they become due. This will force your soul to fall closer to moderation.

The following dua has been related from the Messenger (upon whom be peace) for protection against laziness among other problems:

    اَللّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعِجْزِ ، وَالْكَسْلِ، وَالْجُبْنِ ، وَالْهَرَمِ ، وَالْبُخْلِ ، وَأَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَأَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ. [1][1][1]

Allâhumma innî acûdhu bika minal-ajzi wal-kasli wal-jubni wal-harami wal-bukhli, wa a'udhbika min adhabil qabri, wa a'udhubika fitnatil mahya walmamat.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, anxiety and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from the torments of grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials and tribulations of life and death.

    Default protection from dajjal

    Assalamu alaikum,

The recommendation of reciting both the beginning and ending ten verses of Surat al-Kahf (the 18th sura of the Qur’an) has been transmitted from the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). It is also recommended to recite the entire sura on Fridays. [see below]

Imam Mundhiri (Allah have mercy on him) devoted a chapter of his al-Targhib wa’l Tarhib (‘Encouragement and Warning’) to this,

“ Encouraging reciting Surat Kahf, or Ten Verses from its Beginning or Ten from its End

Abu al-Darda’ (Allah be pleased with him) related that the Prophet of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said, “Whoever commits ten verses from the beginning Surat al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal.” [Muslim, Abu Dawud, Nasa’i, and others; the wording is Muslim’s]…

In a narration in Muslim and Abu Dawud it states, “From the end of Surat al-Kahf.” Tirmidhi related is with the words, “Whoever recites three verses from the beginning of al-Kahf will be protected from the tribulations of the Dajjal.” [Mundhiri, al-Targhib wa’l Tarhib, #2172-2173]

Imam Shafi`i (Allah have mercy on him) said in his Umm,

“It has reached us that whoever recites Surat al-Kahf on Fridays will be protected from the Dajjal.” [Shafi`i, al-Umm, 1.239]

It is recommended to recite Surat al-Kahf completely the night before Friday, and it is also recommended to do so Friday itself, before Maghrib time. Ibn Abidin said, “And it is best to do so early on Friday, in order to rush to the good and to avoid forgetting.” [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, ‘Bab al-Jumu`ah’]

The evidence for it being recommended includes the hadith related by Hakim and Bayhaqi, from Abu Sa`id (Allah be pleased with him), “Whoever recites Surat al-Kahf on Friday, light shall shine forth for him between the two Fridays.” [Ibn Hajar, Talkhis al-Habīr]

The wisdom behind it, as mentioned by hadith commentators such as Nawawi, Qurtubi, Qari, and others, is that:

    a) There are tremendous signs and portents mentioned in these verses. However reads these regularly and ponders on their meanings with not be led astray by the Dajjal;

    b) The surah as a whole has stories of the struggle between true belief in Allah and the realities of faith, and materialism. Reflecting on any of these

    c) It is a secret whose knowledge Allah alone posses, and we have follow it because of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace)’s guidance, with full certainty.
