Divorcing a lady- does she have to know?

Salam Alaykum,

I have been asked by a certain brother about whether his wife has to know that he is divorcing her in order for the divorce to be valid. I told him that from my knowledge a man can divorce his wife without her knowledge. However I want to be sure that this is the correct response (preferably with citations as well).

Yes... Even if he said it in private and it was heard by him only and he had the intention of divorcing her.....

Talaq is VALID without any witnesses

BUT...

It is recommended to have witnesses and have some paper-work from your Mosque (in this day & age)
