Nawab Siddeeq Hasan Khan says regarding a Majzub Ibn al-Faaridh:

He was inclined-towards-nakedness {this may be a reference to his poverty}, pious and a person with good qualities, he lived in Makkah Mukarammah for a long period of time.....he would remain dumbstruck at most times, with stoned eyes, neither seeing nor hearing the one who addressed him.....he would remain in this state for upto ten days, neither eating, nor drinking nor talking nor making any movement. When this state would pass, Allah Ta'ala would open a gate of speech on him, and he would come up with an original qaseedah, exquisite and peerless in its beauty.
