Brother Zubayr, When a person is suffering severe depression, just saying "think of those who are worse of than you, show some gratitude"..............Does not solve the depression. You have to been through it to know what it feels like.
Often the person ends up feeling worse when they see those who are suffering from afflictions they think to themselves........" I am useless, I am hopeless, I am no good for myself or anyone else I am selfish I am ungrateful, People are worse of then me. They do not complain, but that is all that I do."
This results in the person having feelings of Selfhatred....And thinking I am evil. and I deserve to be Punished e.t.c.
So You have to experience it to realise what the Sister is going through.
As Sallam Alaykum.
Having read most of your post I think you are a lot older then people think.
Perhaps that is also an issue we see all the people the same age as us and they have achieved many thing in their life. Whilst we feel what have I done with my life...........It has been a total waste.........I am just useless.
Insha'Allah we should try not focus on those wasted years....we will just end up feeling more useless and depressed.
Perhaps making a thread in The sisters section and hooking up with sisters locally will help.
I know it is probably more difficult to meet up with total strangers and share problems with them in real life. But there is no harm in trying........you might just end up meeting some wonderful people.
Anyways Here is a link to a story from the Inspirational stories section I don't if you read it. But this brothers story really touched me. Insha'Allah if you have time Have a read.

Silence Is Golden....!
As Salaam Alaykum.
I think People just mean well...Sister.
Incidentally I used to offer the exact same advice to people who where depressed. " Think of those who are worse the blind the poor etc".
It is only when you have experienced depression yourself that you realise that it is just not so easy to overcome.............especially if one has suffered over a longtime.
I know when you get conflicting advice it is very confusing.
My depression was more illness related...........What I found really funny is how everyone suddenly becomes a Doctor even after you tell them theres no cure. They give you advice about all kinds of Herbal remedies and stuff.
I think perhaps meeting a sister in real life who has been through the same things you have and has suffered from depression. Will be of greater help.
The problem is most people dont understand depression.........They either think the person is a Moaner.......Or they think the person is seeking attention.
I have a physical illness yet I have heard people say there is nothing wrong with him.......he is just acting.
So I suppose it would help to meet someone in real life who has gone through the same problems and who actually understands.
