    Salaam.

Nice idea Br Sulaman , but if you write "Smile".... when you responding to the opposite Sex then it comes across as flirting.

    We have to maintain Hayaa.

I used to write *smiles* before instead of this but i felt weird writing smiles because it seems unusual somehow since no one actually uses the expression here... if everyone here did the same then it would never have been counted as flirting. I guess its best to than to *smile*in sunniforum.

    Salaam's

I think it is best react to the opposite gender. Exactly the same way one would in real life....It is very easy to become lax on the internet, and to start speaking more freely whilst on the web then one would in real life.

Shaykh Kamalludin Ahmed mentions this whole internet thing and how slowly and subtly a person can fall prey to the snares and whisperings of Shaytaan even on
Islamic sites, blogs etc. The lecture is available on Tasawwuf.org called " Shaytaans Temptation Of The Youth"......Also I have read a few real life stories of people falling victim to this fitnah on Islamic sites I wrote a post about this called "Whispers In The Heart".

So no one should consider then self safe or protected from this fitnah Shaytaan works in a very subtle manner, what may start out innocently may become an infatuation.

One way to tell if the words or expressions are being misinterpreted is if the expressions which are unique to us are suddenly being used by others.

In Popular Psychology it is called mirroring for example a person might say
" Hello I enjoyed your Post it Was real Funz" then the other person suddenly start using the unique expression of " Funz" in their correspondence with us, and others Subconciously with out realising....It is a sign that the other person ( of opposite gender) may be becoming slowly infatuated.

So it is better to reserve a certain style of speech that reveals our personality on the " Brothers Only" Or "Sisters Only" sections.
    Silence Is Golden....!

I completley agree with comments made by brother Julaybib....... Its amazingly shocking how we are ignorant to the obvious.....

I strongly recommend a book (the Jinn and Devills by Islamic Creeds) I read last year but till this day I remember the context clearly.

The author explains the methods used by the devils to convey wrong as good and applies it to tadays culture and society.

I actually find myself more aware now then before when put in such situations we would normally deem to be acceptable and let down are guard.

    Assalamu Alaykum,

Very good points, and I agree. But sometimes it’s hard to speak neutrally or in a formal tone. You can’t always stay formal. It is totally impossible for me, so I guess it is a very good idea to have conversations at sisters’ only sections, and so on and so forth. The only problem is getting in.

Coming back to the topic, I am only going to relate what I am going to say to make it clear for myself, and not to personalize things…

I used to avoid using smilies time ago, but when I noticed that even the scholars (no offence) used it here, in these general discussion areas, I found it quite strange. Things you don’t like, which stays under your subconscious level, will always come out unconsciously even if you feel it is wrong. Eg. I did not like using smilies, but started using them after seeing so much of them here in sunniforum…now a point has come, where I think it is fine to use it. Hence it will be best if a scholar could tell us what the truth behind the matter is.

Some people say that using smilies is also like crafting or drawing images of living things. Regardless of the fact that it may be abstract or what have you. They don’t care whether it is used in a mixed discussion or in a sisters ‘only’ or a brothers ‘only’ forum.

I hope somebody clears all of this because I am finding it distressing.

A friend of mine sent me the following fatwaas:

Q: I want to ask that the use of Emotions i.e. smiles in chat or email comes under drawing pictures?

    Ans:

The use of emotional signs, for example, smile, sad, etc. in a cellphone falls in the category of animate pictures.

It is prohibited to make use of such emotional signs in a cellphone.

    and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

    Mufti Ebrahim Desai

    Q. so a smiley face (as they are known) are concatenated to the sentence to show the writers mood.

As chatting on the Internet is becoming evermore popular for muslims when socialisng with friends and relatives instead of using the telephone, a trend has been emerging that people have been giving a blind eye to. Ask anybody who chats on the internet regularly and they will tell you that sometimes it is difficult to transfer your expression to your chatting buddy,]

Ans: Chatting on the internet is similar to speaking on the telephone. It is not permissible for male or female to speak on the telephone to the opposite gender who is a Ghayr Mahram (not prohibited in marriage) freely and without necessity. If there is a genuine need which is valid in Shari'ah, then members of the opposite gender may speak through the telephone with modesty and confine the discussion to the need.

To speak freely and beyond necessity is a sin. The same rule applies for chatting on the internet. No person should decide him/herself what is a valid reason in Shari'ah to speak on the phone or chat on the internet. Many people have their own interpretations of genuine need which is not acceptable in Shari'ah. We are aware of many such people who have caused ruin to their lives especially by chatting on the internet with the opposite gender. The expression of smiley faces and sad faces through internet chatting falls in the category of drawing pictures of animate objects which is prohibited. As an alternative, one may express his/her happiness and sadness in words.
