    Default Mixing and Matching!!

    Assalamualaikum!!

Can we mix and match Fiqh matters!! Like Praying like Hanafi and observing fast like a Shafi or Maliki. If not then y? I ask this question coz had a debate with my aunt who said if all madhabs are correct then why follow one, why not follow a bit of everything!!!

I once had this conversation with an aalim. He said if you follow abit of everything how do you know you won't end up following your desires.

The basis of the question was if all the four imams are correct why not follow what you feel is easy!! I know it creates confusion sometimes but hey its a valid question.

If you are sick and go to 4 different doctors, and they all give you different medicine. Then you just mix the medicine you got from all 4, what would happen?

this is just my opinion but please consult any other teachers regarding this. I think what not permissible is to do one act according to one madhhab that is prerequisite to other act according to another madhhab. For example taking wudu' according to Shafi'i and pray like Hanafis. Or touching dog as Maliki and pray like Shafi'i.

The truth is that you can mix and match. As long as there is some primary text that is evidence for that practice or that agrees in principle then you will be able to substantiate your claim to that practice.

The only other concern here is what are the accepted opinions on matters up to this point. The answer to that question can only be partial since we only have part of what scholars ruled on from the past - we do not have all the various views available to us only what became predominant through the fiqh guilds. We also have certainly not exhausted all the possibilities that the primary texts can give us - especially when in the past century we have acquired so much new knowledge previously unknown. That new knowledge will allow us to get even deeper into working with the primary Islamic texts and nuancing our understanding.

The objections to mixing and matching actually don't make sense, the real goal is to preserve the 4 madhhab structure. That may have been necessary at one time but our community today demands more than this. So if someone tells you mixing isn't possible then know that it is of course possible but it isnt desirable for those who for whatever reason want the madhhabs in power.

Fiqh councils of today will look at all various opinions along with their own assessment of primary texts to arrive at a conclusion.

You have validated the thoughts which I articulated, and you found offensive, in another thread.

Bro Sunni Student, if I am violating something you believe to be right then please tell us about that. Do you have a different view on mixing? Mixing is even allowed by clasical scholars up to the point that any act you do must be accepted in totality by at least one Imam. I believe it can go further than that...what are your thoughts?

My comment above has nothing to do with the issue of this thread. It has more to do with a validation of what I concluded was your perspective and approach to "religion" and Islam on the basis of your posts.

I do not want to turn this, or any thread, into a personal debate between yourself and I as that is not my intention.

I have not said, nor implied, that you've violated a single policy here at SunniForum, nor have I levied any accusations against you but, rather, you have done so against myself and Sunni Forum.

Regardless, pursuing this "issue" further is of no benefit and this is Ramadhan so I will stop typing here.

Ok I dont want to argue either. I meant violating as in violating something you believe to be true about the madhhabs, etc not something personal or policy.

Yes lets stick to the topics of the thread insha'Allah...
