    Salamu Alaikum

The month of Muharram is one of the 4 sacred months in which fighting is forbidden and so forth.

No sister, we do not indulge in chest beating, Zanjeer zani or Tatbeer. Muharram is sacred because Allah has made it so in the Qur'an. It is also notable due to the fasting done by the Prophet in the month which is Mustahab. It is praiseworthy to due constant Tahajjud during this time.

It is innovation to turn this into a month of mourning, to believe one should not marry and so forth. The best way of remembering the Awliya is following them.

The same reason he made the other three months sacred - His will. It is the same reason why Dhil Hijjah is sacred, or Sha'ban and Ramadhan.

    salamu alaikum

The Qur'an mentions 4 sacred months. The hadith of the Prophet have expounded on these qur'anic verses. They hold immense merit because firstly, Allah has forbidden fighting during this month. Secondly, the Prophet observed special Ibadat during these months and stressed on people to take part.

For the month of Muharram, Imam Nawawi says it is recommended to fast the whole month. Further, hadith states that a person who fasts during this mont, especially on the 9th and 10th will have his sins forgiven (Trimidhi). Giving charity during this month is also stressed as is praying Tahajjud (Lataif by Ibn Rajab)

It is one of the blessings Allah has given to us to allow us to better ourselves, seek refuge and forgiveness for our sins.
