I have always wanted to know about this. Can anyone write a 'short' story of how it happened, and who was right and who was wrong, and who was the winner?
"People are asleep when they're alive, they're awakened when they die" - Sayyidina Ali.
InshaAllah, by february, there will be a series of recorded lectures in Urdu, entitled "Mushajirat-e-Sahabah(Radhi Allahu Anhum) by Sheikhul Hadeeth Saleemullah Khan Sahib (damat barakatuhum). I'll give the link inshaAllah when it's uploaded.

I do not know urdu. Would somebody be able to translate it for me?
asalamo alaikam brother your question regarding was there a war between Hazrat Ali and Hazrat Muawiya(Allah be pleased with them)
and who was right and wrong? is a question mostly shia pose they want the sunni to hate Hazrat Muawiya.According to what i have heard the ulema say this war was caused because of misunderstanding and the khawarij. There was no real winner in this war it was brutal and many muslims died.We should not have any ill feelings towards the Sahaba because of this they were the greatest people to walk on this earth after the Ambiya alai salaam. What happened was sad and we leave it to that we should not get into who was right and wrong we let Allah to judge that.
We should rectify ourselves and look at all the good things these two great Sahaba have done for Islam and not look at there mistakes which are few compared to ours when we sin night and day.Iam not putting you down brother you might be sincere in your question it is best that you ask ulema InshAllah when that brother provides the link i will try to transalate it for you or the brother can do it for you.The ulema will give a proper answer and will rest your mind regarding this question may Allah give us the understanding and to act upon what we know aameen.

Thank you.
Was it a misunderstanding because
They were both companions, therfore it is impossible they fought each other knowingly.
Or
There was a genuine misunderstanding that resulted in the loss of Muslim life?
I look forward to the translation.

After the death of Sayyidina Uthman - Allah be pleased with him - the Khilafat was given to Sayyidina Ali. There was no disagreement on this fact and no one contested his Khilafat in any way. What the disagreement was about was the handing over the killers of Sayyidina Uthman, some whom were present within the army of Sayyidina Ali, details of their names can be found in the books of Tarikh such as Imam Tabaris or Ibn Kathirs. However, at Sayyidina Ali did not do this immediately, according to him there was too much chaos and such procedures i.e. of nabbing the killers, should be done afterwards. Some of the Sahaba did not see this as acceptable and sought the killers immediately and this is where the Fitna started.
