Read the preface, it is quite fascinating, as it reflects Western scholars' views on classical grammarians of the Arabic language and of Arabs/muslims in general. al-Jurjani's Miata Amil, along with its commentary, is one of the key grammar texts in the Darse Nizami curriculum, and this translation is done by Abraham Lockett, a British expatriate (I believe) who resided in India in the early parth of the 19th century.

Abdul-Qahir al-Jurjani, the author of Mi-at 'Amil, is very prominent as an Arabic linguist. He is particularly known for his work in Balaghah and more specifically the science of 'Ilm al-Ma-'ani of which he is the founder. His two works, Dala-il al-I'jaz and Asrar al-Balaghah, are the most important works written on al-Balaghah, and it is also al-Jurjani who inspired the Balaghah aspects in az-Zamakhshari's tafsir, entitled "al-Kash-shaaf". Despite the presence of Mu 'tazilte ideas in the al-Kash-shaaf, it is still highly valued for its Balaghah.

Abdul-Qahir al-Jurjani's Mi-at 'Amil inspired the Turkish al-Birgwi (or al-Barkawi) to write his own treatise on the al-'Amil entiled "Kitaab al-'Awaamil (al-Jadiid)" which is huge in the Turkish Madrasahs. al-Bigwi went on to write his masterpiece Ith-haar al-Asraar which he organised according to his al-'Awaamil treatise but incorporating the content of Ibn al-Hajib's al-Kaafiyah which is popular in the Indo-Pak sub-continent, Turkey and Iran.

Abdul-Qahir al-Jurjani is thus a great figure in the Arabic Linguistic Tradition esp. in al-Balaghah and to him is attrubuted the theory that the Inimitability of the Qur'an lies in its Nathm (structural organisation of the words).

Where can I buy a copy of the Arabic text?
The messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, said: "The servant speaks words, the consequences of which he does not realize, and for which he is sent down into the depths of the Fire further than the distance between the east and the west."

    [Bukhari and Muslim].

You can order from Azhar Academy. Their Darse Nizami catalogue:

    http://www.azharacademy.com/Download..._Catalogue.pdf

Sharh Mi'atu 'Amil is code MB023. Phone on 020 89119797 and ask to be transferred to the Arabic / Urdu Books department.

Or you can order from Bolton Islamic Book Centre: http://www.islamicbookcentre.co.uk/b...ist_arabic.pdf

For both, it would be better to order more books as there is a charge for postage and packaging.

You can find the Maktabat al-Bushra version of Sharh Mi'atu 'Amil online here:
