At the start of the year we also need to keep in mind that one more year of our lives has come to an end. If our actions were evil, and we were treading the path to Jahannum, we have now come one year closer to our final abode. And if we were doing good deeds, we now have one year less to acquire our goal. As an Arabic poet says:
The passing of days and night please a person, but he does not understand that the passing of days and nights are in reality the passing of his life.
We need to value each and every second of ours, as it is possible that we may not be here for the 1st of Muharram next year. This is what Imam Bukhari rahamatuallahi alayh alludes to in his poem by saying:
Appreciate the value of the reward of Salaah whilst you have the ability to do so, for it is possible that your death comes upon you suddenly.
How many healthy people have you seen who have died without any illness?”
