Question Are Sadia Chicken Sausages halal? (E-120)

    Assalamu alaikum,

I got a lot of Sadia Chicken Sausages which are Halal certified.
But later noticed that the Ingredients include E-120 (cochineal, extracted from scale insects).

Can anyone shed light on whether E120 could be from an alternate halal source?

    Thank you.

Sadia Chicken Sausages Halaal or Haraam ?

Sadia chicken sausages contain E-120 which is considered impermissible for muslims.

Also the definition of the ingredient is as follows:
    E120
Cochineal, Carminic acid, Carmines, Natural Red 4
An expensive red colouring, not suitable for vegetarians as it is extracted from the crushed carcasses of the female Dactylopius coccus, a cactus-feeding scale insect, which are killed by either immersion in hot water or by exposure to sunlight, steam, or the heat of an oven. The variety in the appearance of commercial cochineal is caused by these differing methods. It takes around 70,000 insects to make one pound of cochineal.

The water soluble form is used in alcoholic drinks with calcium carmine, the insoluble form, being used in a wider variety of products. Together with ammonium carmine they can be found in alcoholic drinks, bakery products and toppings, biscuits, desserts, drinks, icings, pie fillings, variety of cheddar cheese, sauces and sweets.

It is one of the colours that the Hyperactive Children's Support Group recommends be eliminated from the diet of children.

    We concur with SANHA's reply.

    Muhtaram, Assalâmu 'alaykum w.w.

Jazâkumullâh Khairan for your query and for the opportunity to be of service to you. We advise as follows:

    · We are not aware of the arrangements made by the Saudi authorities in terms of Halaal importation and cannot comment thereon.

    · Our visits to several Brazilian plants revealed inadequate controls, non-Muslim slaughtered products being packed as Halaal etc.

    · Most of the abattoirs in that part of the world do not slaughter all their animals Halaal. Abattoirs that facilitate Halaal slaughter only allocate a portion of the day for Halaal and the rest of the day to non-Halaal.

    · Beyond the slaughter point, there is no authorised Muslim control over the rest of the plant.

    · Accordingly, the packaging and Halaal labeling is left to the plants control and discretion.

    · SANHA therefore recommends that caution be exercised

    And Allah Ta'âla Knows best.
