Greetings,
S. H. Nasr sees Sayyidna Abu Bakr as-Sadiq as the first Khalifa of the Prophet Muhammad and points out that Sayyidna Ali supported and assisted Abu Bakr in his leadership of the community. Nasr believes that while the first three Khulafa represent the function of leader of the Muslim community in general Ali represented in his term as Khalifa both the function of leader of the Muslim community in general and the function of being the representative par-excellence of the sanctity of Muhammad (the Barakah Muhammadiyya), which explains his spiritual preeminence and his role in transmitting the inner content of the religion as bequeathed to him by the Prophet. Without citing Nasr’s numerous essays and books I think this explanation would gain his approval.

Seyyed Hossein Nasr is an Islamic scholar who specializes in Sufism, Islamic history, and Islamic philosophy. He is in no way mixed up with revolutionary politics.
