Niqab isn't a fardh for Malikis. Plus there's the case of a brother smiling at a niqabi..

best to ask someone pious and knowledgable

    (not me)

all i know is that rulings do and can change according to context/environment.

eg. some ulama do say that niqab for females is only wajib if by her uncovering her face there is a chance of fitna occuring....if no fitna possibility then no need for niqab.

the question is, what is the definition of fitna?

Yeah, you can submit the question to the scholar of your choice.

Niqab isn't wajib in the Maliki school, nor Shafi (I believe), so that's two out of four.

Sunniforum does represent all four madhabs after all.

Well, the current tilt of the conversation is whether or not in real life we can smile while conversing with one another (as then you can analogise to online). Niqab/purdah is obviously a part of that discussion and the simple fact is that it's not wajib across madhabs.

Is it permissable to smile at a non-mahram (male or female)? Is it makruh? There's a proper fiqh question for ya.
Plus there's the case of a brother smiling at a niqabi..
Bro Mossy non mahram , men and women are not even suppose to be lookin at each other , so how would it be permissible to smile at them.
If one is given salaam by a non mahram then it is not neccessary to reply to that salaam if they is fear of fitna and evil. The gaze is one of the arrows from the arrows of shaytaan.
Lookin at this, i dont think it is permissible for a muslim non mahram to smile at each other.

    this should help

It is Waajib (compulsory) for a Muslim to reply to the salaam of a Muslim if there is no fear of Fitna and evil, for example, a Ghayr Mahram makes salaam to a male.

In such a situation where there is fear of Fitnah and evil, one should not reply to the salaam. It is not appropriate for a Muslim to display bad character and conduct in front of a non-Muslim. If a non-Muslim makes salaam, in principle, one should reply ‘Salaamun alaa manittaba’ alhudaa’ (May peace be upon those that follow guidance). One may offer an answer to the effect of the above with respect and dignity.

Mossy: niqaab is considered Wajib by many Ulema in the Hanafi madhhab. Therefore it is best not to make such over-ecompassing sweeping statements such as: " the simple fact is that it's not wajib across madhabs." unless we are Muftis of all four schools.

I personally think smiles don't make much of a difference. Its just a cartoon. Nothing to be taken perosnal, and besides we're online. There is a HUGE difference between smiling in person and smiling online. However, I think brother canthtinkofusername bought up a good point. The way of taqwa is always the best. Sometimes we take certian things very lightly, not realizing the effect it might have on others. I think many ppl just add a smile on their post just to end a debate on a good note.
