Default ANSWERED: Ruling on men wearing a hat

    Salaam

What is the status of men wearing a hat when they read namaaz etc. Is it a sin to not where a hat. As a child I heard many things such as the shaitaan urinates on your head and so on if you don't where a hat.

Also the hujjaj are not allowed to where a hat from what I know. Anyone know what is the reason behind this is.

    jazakallah khair

The topi(hat) hold a very high status in Islam.

It serves to show that the wearer is a Muslim, thereby distinguishing him from the followers of other religions. Islam lays great stress of the protection of our Islamic identity and the topi goes a long way in ensuring this.

It is a sign of the humility of the wearer and his reverence before Allah.

It has been the practice of the Prophets of Allah (A.S) and the pious ones throughout the ages, thus by adopting the topi, one is showing that his affiliations lie with those who are the friends of Allah and not with the friends of Shaytaan (Satan).

And most importantly, the topi was the practice of our beloved Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). Just as people who love a certain hero or star will unquestioningly adopt the dress and habits of their idol, we Muslims in our deep-rooted love for our beloved Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) endeavor to follow him in his every action and habit, regardless of whether we find any "wisdom" or reason behind it. His doing it, is sufficient a wisdom for us.

My understanding is that is a sunnah and therefore it is not a sin if not worn, but one should remember the hadith:
"The one who leaves my sunnah, is not from me"

And therefore should at least try and wear it during salaah

In addition, it is highly recommended to cover one's head during Salaah, and somewhat disliked (makruh tanzihan) if not done so without reason.

With respect to not wearing a Topi/Kuffi while in the state of Ihram, this is essentially because the major books of fiqh all state that any sewn clothing or any clothing which "surrounds" the body is not permissible. It is worthwhile reading the following by Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari:

As mentioned by Sr. Raeesa and Br. Saleel, wearing a cap is recommended and commendable, but salat without it is valid. And I haven't come across the part about Shaitaan urinating on the head....

    Allah knows best.
