    Default Detective in Mosque Brawl

A policeman ignored colleagues trying to control a mass brawl outside a mosque and instead joined in the fracas, a court heard yesterday.

Det Sgt Tariq Hussain was seen arguing with other Muslims while off duty and apparently hit a man repeatedly.

But when asked to help out by an officer he allegedly sneered at him and returned to the clash, which escalated into a 100-man punch-up.

Yesterday Hussain appeared in court with three other men charged with violent disorder and a fourth accused of affray.

Former officer Steven Mould told Birmingham crown court: "He was acting like an antagonist and yob."

Stephen Thomas, prosecuting, added: "Off duty he may have been, but he was asked to help restore calm and he just walked off."

The row was over a mosque leader in Burton-on-Trent, Staffs, last April. All five men deny the charges.

    The trial continues.

    Asslamo Allaikum,

There are regular problems between the Barelwees of Burton-upon Trent and everybody else...

Apart from what you have quoted:

Reply from a Muslim to the Newspaper (which off course never ot published):

    Sir/Madam,
The article entitled "Extremists hijack Muslims' parade" is a interesting piece of journalism. For a start, we see the loosely defined and distastefully manipulated 'extremists' label being slapped onto a very small minority of ignorant individuals - not representative of the majority of Muslims. The latter being a point which the Burton Mail fails to highlight. Such journalism does not play a constructive role in community relations but merely reinforces negative stereotypes - on both sides. Whilst the Burton Mail does point out the peaceful nature of the event, it fails to provide the focus on the '1000 devotees' in the articles heading. Surely, the fact that '1000 devotees' singing, waving flags peacefully on their way to a 'four-course meal' could have dominated the headline and provided a more postive and constructive insight into the Muslim community as oppossed to reinforcing the negative cognitions held by the public? Why lead into the story in such a negative fashion?

In addition, as a Muslim, I do not agree with the procession taking place in the first instance. I fail to understand, as would many others, Muslims and Non-Muslims alike, how a procession on the Bank Holiday weekend, on Easter Sunday would have been welcomed by the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). Surely by inconveniencing normal people going about their business on a Bank Holiday weekend is inconsisent with the Prophet Muhammad's teachings on inconveniencing others, be they Muslim or Non-Muslim. This is a man who, rather than awake a sleeping cat on his cloak, cut off that portion of the cloak on which the cat lay asleep in order not to awake it from it's slumber. There is no tradition of such marches in Islam. True love for the Prophet of Islam does not reside in marches, chanting slogans, singing away, making speeches and enjoying a diverse range of traditional Indian food. True love for the Prophet resides in the merits of ones deeds, the sincerity of actions, the love for mankind, giving to charity and developing an outstanding moral character.

To conclude, whilst it is understandable that 'speculation sells', I believe that I speak for the majority when I state that the media have gone into 'Muslim Hyperdrive' with over exposure given to Muslim issues and every problem in their community being magnified. As far as those individuals who were putting up inciteful, hate-mongering material are concerned, they need to understand their faith from educated well-meaning scholars, not loud, audacious imams from the villages in the mountains of Pakistan. They also need to understand that this is Britain, the law is the law and if you commit the crime - you do the time.

Is it really only a UK problem?

You might be joking but actually I know of plenty of mosque brawls that have happened here and they're not restricted to just one denomination.

Does this happen in the US, SA or anywhere else?

No, not in the U.S. of A. I don't know about SA but when I was there for a few days they seemed like decent folks.

That never happens in the USA. I haven't even seen that happen in Pakistan.

    The UK... *shakes head*
