Thread: Authors to avoid

    With regards to uthaymin:
More of Allah's Attributes: We believe that Allah has a glorious and dignified face: "There will remain the face of your Lord, majestic and splendid" (55:27).

We believe that Allah has two generous hands: "No, both His hands are wide open; He spends how He pleases" (5:64); "They do not esteem Allah with the esteem that is due to Him. The whole Earth will be His handful on the Day of Resurrection, and the Heavens will be rolled up in His right hand. Glory be to Him and exalted is He above that which they associate with Him" (39:67).

We believe that Allah possesses two real eyes, because He said: "And build the ark under Our eyes as We reveal" (11:37). The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "His veil is light. Had He removed it, the sublimity of His countenance would have burnt all that His sight reached" (Muslim and Ibn Majah). The Sunnites unanimously have agreed that He has two eyes. This is supported by the Prophet's saying about the Dajjal (the anti-Christ) that "he is one-eyed and your Lord is not one-eyed" (Bukhari and Muslim).
    Thats from:"The Muslim's Belief
By Shaikh Muhammad as-Saleh al-Uthaimin. Translated by Dr. Maneh al-Johani, with slight modifications", taken directly from a salafi site
I dont know just how far the modifications go, or whether uthaymin later contracted those statements (if he made them), but one thing is sure, i have seen people quoting this on salafi boards and using it to make unsuspecting sunnis anthropomorphists. (yay i spelt it right! i think)

    Okay so far I've got:
    Authors:
    Naasir-ud-Din Al-Albani.
Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah bin Bazz.
    Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen.
    Javed Ahmad Ghamdi
    Habibur Rahman Siddiqui
    Tamanna Imadi
    "Maulana Muhammad Ali" {Qadiyani}
    Khalid Abou el-Fadl
    Ghaulam Ahmad Pervez
    Ghulam Jilani Barq {he made tawbah at the end of his life but his books are still being published by Pervaizis}
    Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan
    Chiragh `Ali
    Syed Ameer Ali
    Prof. Fazl ur Rahman
    Abul `Ala Maududi
    Khurram Murad
    Yusuf Islahi
    Amin Ahsan Islahi

    Publishers:
    ******************
    TROID (from Canada)
    al-Hidaaya Bookshop (Birmingham, UK)
Darus Salam (known for tampering works)
    Message of Islam
    Books of Abul A'la al-Mawdudi
    Al-Manhaj publishing
Jamiat Ihyaa Mihaj al-Sunna (from Ipswich)

    Should that be enough?

can anyone tell me regarding jamal badawi and huda al khattab, are they sunni or salafi? (the latter makes lots of references to the opinions of different madhhabs, but then check out her bibliography in her womans handbook, theyre nearly all salafi)

i think the important thing is that you have an aalim/shaykh to fall back on if you have any queries/doubts. that's what saved me from salafi-ism at uni, alhamdulillah.

    as salamu alaykum

one of the main reasons for avoiding all these publications is, as abul hasan mentioned, the presence of gross fabrications, mistranslations and forgeries on behalf of our pious predecessors...

it really is a shame, because these big publishing houses funded by petrol dollars, often translate classical texts.

for example, the widespread and common tafsir of ibn Kathir omits many matters which contradict the salafi minhaj... in addition, the famous riyad as-salihin by Imam an-Nawawi which comes in two volumes is known to contain gross mistranslations and poor commentary (dar us-salam at it again)....

fortunately the tides are turning and with what finding the madhhabi's have, more correct translations and texts are appearing.

    Assalamu Alaikum,

Salafi books..can be easily spotted, they have the word bidah on most of the pages, so have a flick thro' a book before you buy it!

Also this is going to sound a bit silly but the authentic books on fiqh like Talimul Haq don't look as bright and colourful as some of the salafi books, so don't be deceived by the layout of the salafi books, read the author's name or publisher.

    Walaikum Asalam.
In the Hereafter a terrible punishment awaits you but also forgiveness from Allah swt and His good pleasure. The life of this world is nothing but the enjoyment of delusion. (Surah al-Hadid: 20)

stay away from 'fake' sufi books too.

    stay away from Orientalist literature.

stay away who takes words like 'madhabi' and spells it like 'madhabee'.

how to spot a 'salafi' book:

    1. really attractive cover
    2. phonetic spelling throughout ie. Aboo Haneefah, Allaah, Salaam etc.
    3. normally written by either someone who lives in Saudi or someone who grew up on the streets in the West but became practicing and now uses a kunya to come across as more respectable ie. Aboo Daawood Al-Kanadee, Umm Ibraaheem AlAmreekee, Ibn Ghulam Muhammad Al-Punjabee etc
    4. normally refers to Shaykh Al-Albaanee as the Muhadith of the century
    5. makes sure it can get a few digs in on sufis, asharis, maturidis, etc.
    6. contains a chapter on the THREE different types of TAWHEED even if the book is on something like 'how to make wudhu'
    7. u can TELL that it's been translated from arabic into english! the syntax gives it away.
    8. every statement in the book will have a reference attached to it.
the reference will blow u away with its detail but it may not necessarily be authentic...oh well.
    9. it will most probably have a whole load of appendices, glossaries, bibliographies and list of creedal issues at the back.
    10. it will be available virtually everywhere
    11. it will make u wanna disown ur whole community as innovators
    12. it will have a high proportion of the following words in it: innovation, shirk, bida, tawwassul, wahdatul wujood, saved sect, tawheed, sahih hadith, quran and sunnah yadda yadda yadda
    13. feel free to add more....

btw, the above are just my own observations...im not saying theyre good or bad.

    ^^^

    14. it will state an opinion as THE only opinion on the subject and then 'refute' all other well-known opinions on the matter.
    15. when u hold it in ur hand u will feel as if u are holding the third most authentic book in the universe after the quran and saheeh al-bukhaaree.
