    Salaam.

Liam is an Irish name meaning unwavering, I dont think there is much wrong with the name. Why not give him a middle name that is Islamic and keep Liam. He can decide when he gets older.

many reverts do not officially change there name of the top of my Head there is Danny williams, former British Heavyweight Boxing Champion. And there is Yvonne Ridley the Journalsit.

Probably more essential is to help inculcate a Love for Islam in his Heart, he might also find it difficult in School with having a new name and get Bullied for having a "paki" name, children can be very cruel.

    As Salaamu Alaikum

He is still young so he does not understand the importance. Therefore keep telling him with wisdom. If he doesnt want to still change it than Insha-Allah when he is older he will understand and change it.

    May Allah Guide Us.

    Assalamu'alaikum

    name him after me .......lol

    Liam Ahmad or Ahmad Liam

Ahmad means 'the one praises Allah more than others'. one of the name of prophet Mohammad is Ahmad

On a serious node, The name Liam is fine, there is nothing wrong with it, Insha'Allah. However, A better name can be choosen at later time when liam feels comfortable. It is possible he may be bullied due arabic name. Allow the young man to grow in peace and understand islam. Insha'Allah, may Allah make him the one who praises Allah the most in his home town even if he doesn't choose the name Ahmad

Do not force it. The Prophet (SAWS) asked people to change their names in particular if it had a negative meaning.

    But it is not obkligatory.
It is a VERY powerful act, to take on a new name, but it is not obligatory.

However Liam is a good name, it means guardian in Gaelic. Pressuring him to change his name may create resistance in his heart, when the time is right, as he grows in understanding, he needs to grow into his identity as a Muslim and a young man in the West, as you guide him in his growth try not to force things, particularly at a young age. Let the seed grow, if and when he is ready to take on another name then he shall.

    And Allah knows best

My name was Liam. But I asked shaykh Nuh if he would give me a name that he felt suited me more. So he did: Labid Suleiman Husam al Din. But it was only because I asked him. Liam is the Irish version of the German name William which means "Helmet" or "Resolute Protector". If he wishes to change his name when he is older, then that's fine. But as others have said, it's not obligatory unless of course your name means something derogatory or sinful.
"Not a day passes which does not say, "O son of Adam , I have come to you and I will never come again,so be careful of what you do during my stay" When the day has passed it is folded up and sealed, never to be opened by anyone until Allah reopens it on the day of judgment." Imam Al-Ghazali
