Bidayat al-sul fi tafdil al-Rasul' (The Beginning of the quest for the high esteem of the Messenger) by Izz al-Din ibn Abd al-salam:

Study of the character and distinctive qualities of the Prophet, (peace be upon him), is an obligatory duty upon the believers. In the time that we live in the need for this study has become an even more pressing responsibility upon every believing man and woman. It enhances love of the Prophet, which is an essential element of the faith, and it facilitates imitation of him, which is the only means of salvation.

Over the centuries many works have been produced on the distinctive qualities of the Prophet, (peace be upon him), by great and learned scholars of this ummah. Apart from the well-known compilations of hadiths, the works most often referred to are: al-Shama'il al-Muhammadiyyah by Imam Abu `Isa al-Tirmidhi (d. 279) and al-Khasa'is al-Kubra of Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911).

'Bidayat al-sul fi tafdil al-Rasul' (The Beginning of the quest for the high esteem of the Messenger) by Izz al-Din ibn Abd al-salam is a concise work, summarizing over forty distinctive virtues and characteristics of the (Prophet, peace be upon him), selected from the Qur'an and sound hadiths. Each point in of itself containing profound meanings and insights into the rank of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) which no work can encompass, but merely allude to.

    The Author

Izz al-Din ibn `Abd al-Salam's full name is Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd al-Salam ibn Abu al-Qasim ibn al-Hasan al-Sulami (577-660/1181-1261). He was born in Damascus. In 599 he moved to Baghdad, where he reached the rank of ijtihad in fiqh, and mastery in other Islamic sciences. He then returned to Damascus as a teacher and imam at the zawiya of Imam al-Ghazali, and later at the Umayyad Mosque, and was appointed as a judge in Damascus.

From the pulpit, Ibn `Abd al-Salam condemned the ruler of Greater Syria al-Salih Ismail al-Ayyubi for his surrender of the Palestinian fortress Safad to the Crusaders, and was imprisoned for speaking out. When finally released in 639, he moved to Cairo, where he was received by Sultan Najm al-Din Ayyub, and appointed as judge and imam of Jami` `Amr ibn al-`As, and was appointed a judge in Egypt. He gained such prestige that he was able to implement the Islamic law despite the opposition of rulers.

He wrote many important works on tafsir of the Qur'an, Shafii jurisprudence, the basis of Islamic rulings, formal legal opinion, government, and sufism. The famous titles of his works included: Tafsir al-Qur'an al-`azim, Qawa`id al-ahkam fi masalih al-anam, al-Ghayah fi ikhtisar al-nihayah, Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim, al-isharah ila al-ijaz fib a`d anwa` al-majaz, Maqasid al-salah and Maqasid al-sawm. He died in Cairo at the age of eighty-three

As Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh

We hope you are in the best of health and imaan.

Unfortunately, due to an unforeseen delay in the publication of the book, we are very sorry to say that the course In Search of the Prophet (sallaalahu-alaihi wassalam) has been postponed until a later date. Insha'Allah we will try to rearrange the course as soon as possible and hope to have it towards the end of the summer. We will keep you informed of the future date of the course.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. We do however, have other courses coming up this summer. Part II of Aqeedah Tahawiyyah with Mufti Abdur Rahman ibn Yusuf has been scheduled for the weekend of 26th-27th July. We also have a one day course with Mufti Abdur Rahman ibn Yusuf in South London in July; we shall inform you of the details soon and do keep an eye on our website www.turath.co.uk for further details.

Once again, please accept our sincere apologies for the postponing the course In Search of the Prophet (sallaalahu-alaihi wassalam). Your continued duas and support are much appreciated

    Ma'salaamah
