I myself wasn’t quite sure why some prominent sufis used musical instruments despite the clear sahih hadith condemning the use of musical instruments.
In that regard, this is what Sheikh Nuh said:
“Fuqaha have only made exceptions for some forms of music because of local needs, Ottomans used martial bands to raise the himma of soldiers.”
and
“Every place where the fuqaha went against the outward content of these hadith, they did it within tight culturally circumscribed bounds where they did not have harmful effects on the Ruh, it was disgraceful to use it outside of those bounds.”
I’m not trying to quote Sh. Nuh out of context in order to “fatwa shop” as he clearly stated that these examples can not be used to justify Western music and that the people of Taqwa should stick to the pure music without instruments, but I think it’s important to make a clear distinction between harmful music and the spiritual music which some Sufis used.
Jazakallah Khair wa Khair for that!
it was well needed

As sallamu alaikum
Where can I listen to other Sheikh Nuh Keller lectures?
Wa alaikum as sallam
Wa alaikum as salaam
You can listen to some of his lectures at www.suhba.org in the public access section. There are a LOT more in the members section, but you would have to pay and get references from his murids (or be a murid yourself) before sidi Hamid (the Webmaster) will approve you. That's just to make sure that people that access the site are those who genuinely wish to seek knowledge and not to pick apart the Shaykh's words. And Allah knows best.
Wa salam
