    Default Yellow 5 halal?

    Assalamu alaikum

I received this in a chain mail.

    Forwarded as received:
Yesterday my friend had a Muslim brother invited and while they were serving food they had Mountain Dew 'Pepsi' on the table when the brother looked at the ingredients he found that is has a product called Yellow 5 which is made out of pigs. The brother is a doctor and his wife is a chemist. Please be careful about what you buy from now, every product that has 'Yellow 5' is HARAM Please forward this to all our brothers and sisters who have been mislead and are in the dark..
    Is this true???

    No, it isn't.

Yellow # 5 is a chemical dye and it is Halal if it is used as a powder or granular in a dry food product. But if it is used in liquid food product glycerin is used as solvent in Yellow #5. Glycerin could be from pork or beef or vegetable fat. A kosher symbol on liquid food product containg yellow # 5 indicates vegetable fat is used. Otherwise you have to call the manufacturer.
