    Question New revert and confused!!!!!

    Assalaam alaykum,
I have just joined this forum and I hope to gain much knowledge. I reverted on the eve of ramadan last year. I am finding it difficult to increase my knowledge and follow the right path. There are so many web sites claiming to be 'Sunni' but I don't know if they are trustworthy!
I have been reading some of the threads and i have a slight concern about a book called Bahishti Zewar, as I have been previously told to avoid this book as it is written by a salafi/wahabi..... I don't know if this is correct or maybe I have taken the wrong advice, if any-one can shed some light on this, I would be most gratefull.

this is a good site and even though i differ on some points with other people on here, i believe there are a lot of knowledgeable people here and you will be able to learn a lot.

from what i know there are 2 types of people who are under the lablel sunni...

one is the deobandis and the other is the barelwis.

both are on the sunnah but their are many people in each group who let their sides down and who go to the extremes.

the people who said that the writer of bahesti ziwar is salafi/wahabi more then likely come from the barelvi group. they are in gross error on this opinion and speak out of hatred and ignorance. if you ask them to elaborate their point then they wont be able to give an explanation as they are merely repeating what they have heard from others.

bahesti ziwar is a good book although some of the things in there may seem strange. this is because it was written a long time ago and some of the stuff was relevent to the time and place the book was written.

beware as some groups who have a hatred for moulana ashraf ali thanvi have been known to print copies of behisti ziwar with false stuff added to it in order to fool people.

Thank you for the quick reply, I'm still confused as there seem to be so many different thoughts and knowing which one is correct is very hard to decide. I dont know if I'm allowed to say which forum says this book is wrong, but the strongly advise against it. I have a copy of it and from what I've read it seems to be very usefull. How do I know what is right and what is wrong? I've been told about another book called 'Reliance of the traveller' has any one any thoughts on this book, should I read it?

    Salam,

Book is fine, but written for subcontinental Indians (villagers mainly). To clarify on an earlier post, the subcontinetal muslims who follow the hanafi madhab separate into the deobandi (sunni forum) and barelwi (sunni port) groups. Barelwis and deobandi laymen bicker a lot on inconsequential stuff, forgetting that argumentation is a bad thing, barelwis calling deobandis wahabis and deobandis calling barelwis fruits, all a bit sad and something you shouldn't get involved in. Scholars don't bicker like that. Lots of other types of sunnis, including other groups of hanafis and other madhabs of course. As long as the groups respect the right of other groups scholars to disagree on issues of fiqh, thats fine, where they start insulting, thats eye rolling territory.

Reliance of the Traveller is a Shafi fiqh manual, have a read if your local scholars use the shafi methodology to give rulings.

    Salaam alaykum,

Thanks for the info, is it possible to give me a brief guide to the difference between Hanafi and Shafi schools of thought. I am not in contact with any muslims and I'm finding that I'm getting myself confused in what I should and shouldn't be reading or doing.

    Assalaamu Alaikum Sister

I think that since you are in Darwen it may be possible for you to find some very knowledgable sisters in Blackburn (which I think is quite close).

I shall try and find out if they have any regular programs and shall post the details up here when I get the chance.

    Salaam
