salaams new2islam, welcome to an everincreasing club, take heart though, it is true all will claim they are sunnis and further claim that their strain is the correct one, truth is most will CONTAIN truth, unfortunately as in other religions, eg christianity, many fall short, the best guides are those PRESCRIBED by the Creator, in the Qur'an, but most wont tell you about it, mostly because they dont know, Prophethood is an established fact supported by all, without wanting to confuse youb but is the BASIS where we go wrong, ALLAH Almighty also PRESCRIBED LEADERSHIP, and a SPECIFIC LEADERSHIP in the Qura'n, read story of abraham (as), AFTER he was already an ordained major prophet, and only after his test of 'sacrifice' of son ismail (as), THEN ONLY, Allah (SWT) confers on him IMAMAT, abraham asks for same for his offspring, but is told YES, BUT NOT on those who will be unjust, and cause oppression, etc, ie they will NEVER be UNJUST, ie they will be MA'SOOM, as the prophets, just, blameless, errorless, pure, without blemish of character, remember it is now clear a prophet is not necessarily an imam too, imamat has an element above basic prophethood, but also an imam does not necessarily have the elements of prophethood. ....this is when and how the institution of imamat was established for us...........if you follow this theme, we will progress ....more later as you respond...salaams

are you canny? so there are ONLY two types of muslims as you say above? perhaps yo live in a closed village, only those who say WE are right or closer to the truth will have so narrow an idea, its the same as saying US or THEM, no inbetweens..

Thanks for the info, is it possible to give me a brief guide to the difference between Hanafi and Shafi schools of thought. I am not in contact with any muslims and I'm finding that I'm getting myself confused in what I should and shouldn't be reading or doing.

tread carefully friend, there are FIVE mathahib taught at one of the greatest and oldest islamic institutions ie AL AZHAR in egypt, but you will only hear about four from most muslims, ask yourself why, do reasearch into ALL, then decide, the major difference regarding source is that we sunnis take our sources (hadith) going to the Holy Prophet from his companions, whereas the imamis take their sources as the unblemished, pure, cleansed by Allah (SWT) (Q 33, V33) Ahlul Bayt family of the Holy Prophet, take the best from both sides, and be best guided

You seem to have taken the view that i come from some small backward village, please do not be offended but all I was asking was a simple question.

By "madhabs" here are you referring to Sunni and Shia?
