    Smile Dua and darood

    salaam alaykum

As a revert it can be difficult getting to grips with the daily tasks a muslim has to under take, I wondered if it would be possible to start a thread to help new muslims with things like dua's that should be said on a daily basis, like before eating, sleeping, leaving the house etc, it would be good if we could also have the transliteration too. And its also the same for darood, a new muslim would find it difficult to know what this means, so if any one has transliterations of these and can also tell us the benefits, I think this would be really helpfull.

    Du'a before eating:
    Bismillahi wa 'ala barakatillah

    Du'a after eating:
Alhamdulillahilladhi at'amana wa thaqana wa ja 'alana minal muslimeen

    Du'a before sleeping:
    Allahumma bismika amutu wa ah'ya

    Du'a on waking up:
Alhamdulillahilladhi ah'yana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin nushoor

    Du'a on leaving the house:
Bismillahi tawakkaltu 'al allah (wa la 'hawla wa la quwwata illa billah)

Duroode Ibrahim (the one you recite in the last rak'ah of salah):
Allahumma sallay 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala aali Muhammadin kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala aali Ibrahima innaka hamidum majeed. Allahumma barik 'ala Muhammaedin wa 'ala aali Muhammadin kama barakta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala aali Ibrahima innaka hamidum majeed.

Even (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) is a form of durood.

    Benefits of reciting the Durood:

    wa alaikum assalam,

I highly recommend the book "Reflection of Pearls" for a good collection of dua in arabic, english and transliteration.

I would learn duas one at a time, rather than attempt to learn everything I needed to say in a day all at once. I'd pick a dua from the book, write out the arabic, english and transliteration on a notecard, and then stick it where I would need to see it. For example, I wrote some duas to say when waking up and when going to sleep, and set them on my nightstand next to the bed. I stuck a card up with duas next to the bathroom door for when I went in and out. I put a card on the dining room table for duas related to meals, and another by the door out of the house, etc etc etc.

Maybe I'll make up a word doc with duas on it and upload it to mybloop. inshaAllah I'll post it when I get it done. But still consider purchasing the book because mashaAllah it's fantastic.

    Salaam alaikum

thank you for your replies, I think I will get the book mentioned and I'll also try your suggestion of copying the dua's and placing them around my home.

    As-Salaam Alaikum,
Thanks for creating this thread. Inshallah I will get the Pearls book of duas. It comes with a CD, too. I am a new revert to Islam and older, (57) and I am having a difficult time memorizing the prayers. My intention is to have the prayer format memorized by Rhamadan, along with a few short suras so I can pray appropriately during the Rhamadan. Ali

    Inq2008, A-salaam Alaikum,
I am having a difficult time learning the prayer, as well, brother. Inshallah we will have the strength, determination and certitude to continue and persevere to learn them. I have made an intention to have form and a few surrah memorized by Rhamadan. Ali

    Asalaam alaikum,

As new muslims I think we would also benefit from knowing the dua's to be said before opening and closing our fasts, a transliteration would be most helpfull please.

    As Salaam Alaykum,

I accepted Islam nearly seven years ago, before which I studied much about this religion which became most appealing to me. After taking Shahada, I found a short book which explained the movements of prayer and what to say most helpful.

I also concentrated on learning Al-Fatiha, which is a must for the new Muslim to memorize, as well as the smaller suras, especially the last three and also Sura al-Kafirun. I have been blessed with knowing many of the small suras now but it definitely took alot of practice. We should also recite Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) often, as it expresses much of our beliefs in the Oneness of Allah (Tawhid).

There are also many important adhkar (plural of dhikr) for the Muslim to know, such as what we say after prayers, before and after eating, using the restroom, entering and leaving the home and masjid, etc.. Transliteration is extremely helpful for the new Muslim, although some time down the line it is good to get at least a cursory understanding of the Arabic alphabet.

For beginning the fast, there is no legislated dua however we should have the intention (niyya) to fast our obligatory fast. The place for the intention is in the heart and not outloud.

As for breaking the fast (iftar), then there are two choices - the first narrated by Imam Abu Dawud, the other by Imam Ibn Maja - both of which were graded as hasan:

    "Thahabadh-dhama'u wabtallatil-'urooqu, wa thabatal-'ajru 'insha'Allah"

(The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills).

"Allahumma 'innee 'as'aluka birahmatikal-latee wasi'at kulla shay'in 'an taghfira lee"

(O Allah, I ask You by Your mercy, which encompasses all things, that You forgive me).
