I have a few questions regarding the policies listed in the brochure:

    It says regarding the dresscode:
    Kurtaas (not kafnies) with slits, below the knees;
    Izaars above the ankles;
    Topies;
No red scarves allowed in the Madrasah.
All clothing in plain white material.
    Beards according to Shari’ah.
    No hair.

    1) What is a Kafnie? Does that mean that students are not allowed to wear arab-style thobes that do not have slits?

    2) No hair?!?!? what does that mean exactly? Must the students shave their heads? why?

Furthermore, regarding the in'aam, it says: Students with the best performance, those gaining distinctions, those having best attendance, character, those being most punctual on ma’mulaat, those who are most neat, etc. will be given in’aam at the end of the year.

    3) Just curious, what kind of prizes does this mean?

    4) Regarding boarding, how much is the cost of darul iqamah usually?

Regarding examinations, it says: Students may not miss any examination without a valid reason. Failure to write any examination without a valid reason will be regarded as a serious offence whereupon the student may be suspended or other disciplinary action taken. Any student who failed to participate in any examination for whatever reason must write supplementary examinations. Copying during the examinations or using any other fraudulent means is a serious and punishable offence.

    5) What's the deal with these examinations. Why would anyone miss their examinations after having worked hard all year? Are they optional? It seems like a different concept of examinations than in western colleges...

Regarding what to bring with you to the madrasa: Bedding – Mattress, sleeping bag, blankets, pillow, 2 pillowcases, 2 bed-sheets and 2 bed-spreads

    6) Wait, so students have to bring their own mattresses? Isn't that kind of difficult, and possibly chaotic?

    as salam walaykum

i am not learned and have not been to this darul uloom but i am planning to go after ramadhan inshallah from the little i know inshallah i will try to answer forgive me as i cannot do justice to your questions
someone learned like ameer saab can answer your questions inshallah

    1) the best explanation i can give for a kafnie is when u go to ur local masajid its the thing the pakistani or indian guy is wearing :P its shorter then a thobe and it has slits in the sides

    2) what they mean by no hair is that you have to have them short meaning you cant keep zulfa. when i heard this my first reaction was "why cant i follow the sunnah?" but then my teacher explained and there is alot of hikmat behind this rule besides not only zulfa is the sunnah. maybe our mufti saab will like to elaborate on this more

    3) maybe a million dollars maybe a new car :P i was curious about this as well our ameer saab has been to this darul uloom and he prolly won enuff prizes maybe he would like to share whith us

    4) from what i no its about 6000 rand a year which is a little less then 1000 canadian for a 1000 dollars a year you get a place to sleep food electricity washroom shower facility and much much more i think that is an amazing price compared to other places around the world

    5) in university the prof doesnt drag you into the exam room if you wanna come you do if you dont u sleep in and as in uni you get the few students who arent serious about their studies or just dont want to be ther and were forced to go.
another thing to take in is that in year one they teach 20+ kitaabs and not all kitaabs are big they teach many little kitaabs worth a few marks in the final outcome now some students seeing that kitaab 16 is only worth 3% of the final mark sumtimes they dont give due attention to the book and and they sometimes dont rite those exams but thos e who do this are at a loss because the madressas carriculam has been designed in such a way that all the kitaabs are important even if its worth 3% they didnt throw in ktaabs for fun ther is maqsad behind every kitaab. one of my friends at the darul uloom was telling me that students dont give due attention to tayseri mantiq its a book on logic i think and hes telling me that this kitaab is very useful but students come to that class and take it as a homework period im not saying all but some students do this again im not learned i am still a jahil and dont no anything
mufti saab can only do justice to this question

    6) now again all ur paying is 1000 a year and all these facilities the mads is providing beds are sold at the madressa you dont gotta lug a queen size matress onto the airplane lol
there are about 500 students in the mads saying an average bed costs 50 dollars (estimate) that would cost the madressa $25000 i think the student can do his part and buy his own bed this is not hotel wer going to
and in university i dont think they provide bed and even if they do look at the price difference between uni and mads

these are the thoughts of an illiterate
forgive me for all the mistakes i probably made
ameer saab has attended this darul uloom and he can correct my mistakes and clear the matter up for the both of us

    make dua
    wsalam

    Jazak Allah Khair for that

    Just wondering...

I got a lot of benefit out of Br. Abuhajira's Madrasah Inaamiya Information Thread: http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11353

I was hoping if someone who went to Azaadville or Darul Uloom Zakariyya could make a similar thread, with all the "inside information" so to speak.. ie. food arrangements, bathrooms, schedule, location, facilities, teachers, etc.

Here is a similar post regarding Madrasah Zakariya.
Sahabah رضي الله عنهم would cling fast to the Sunnah, on account of it being Sunnah, while we discard the Sunnah, on account of it being (just) Sunnah!

Brother ylulat seems to have answered most of ur questions.
I will just add to what he said:

The Madrasah is very strict about this rule. Make sure that you wear white Indian/Pakistani style Kurtas.
The principal views these as closer to the sunnah, thus the insistence upon them, as he feels that the Arab-Style ones are a symbol of the Salafiyyah.
Most of our country's Ulama don't agree with him on it, but it is the rule, so as a student, you have to obey.

As the brother mentioned, it means hair must be short, not long.
The reason is that they feel that students keep long hair for the wrong reasons and also a student is expected to be devoted to his studies, not spending his time grooming himself.
Alhamdulillah, I managed to get permission for keeping my "zulfah" for the entire period I was in Madrasah, however such permission is nearly impossible to get.

The prizes are the most important tool of an alim viz. Books.
Don't expect much though, they are normally small books, with the quantity and value increasing for the higher classes.
They normally give a book or two, while in the final year I got nearly 10 books, however as I mentioned, don't expect them to be out of this world.

Madrasah's are normally a bit lax when it comes to examinations. Some students tend to abuse this, by not working had throughout the year, then not attending exams through the excuse of illness etc. They then pitch up the next year and expect to be passed into the higher class, without sitting for exams, as this happens elsewhere and used to happen here as well. Thus the warning on the rule sheet.

No one (or hardly anyone) brings their own mattress.
The Madrasah always used to sell/provide thin sponge mattresses, but this might have changed.
If you want a good stong mattress and you could easily order it from a mattress company, who will deliver it to the Madrasah.

Feel free to ask any other questions.

From what I have heard, it seems like Darul Ulooms Azaadville and Zakariyya are probably the most prestigious schools in South Africa.

Im sure theyre both awesome, but what are some differences between them? The Pros and Cons?

i think darul uloom zakariyaa is more known for their hifz course while azadville for their alim course
