As-salaamu 'alaikum,
According to the Shafi'i madhab it is concidered permissible.
sidi baqir...
are you a shafii?
@mutlib
According to Hanafiya, crab is not a fish hence impermissible.
According to the Hanafi Madhhab, only fish is permissible to consume from sea food animals. There is a difference of opinion amongst the Hanafi Jurists whether shrimps/prawns falls under fish. Those who say it is a fish state it will be permissible to consume. Those who are of the view that prawns/shrimps are not fish say it is impermissible to consume. It is better to adopt precaution and avoid eating it. Consider the following hadith:
دع ما يريبك إلى ما لا يريبك
Leave that which is doubtful for which is not doubtful. (Al-Tirmidhi & Al-Nasa’i)
Crabs are not lawful to consume.

http://www.askimam.org/fatwa/fatwa.p...02c440421cbe71In principle, we as Hanafees are only permitted to eat fish from the sea. Animals and creatures of the sea besides fish are not permissible to eat.
There is a difference of opinion amongst the scholars regarding the permissibility of shrimps. Those that consider shrimps as fish say it is permissible and those that do not consider shrimps as fish say it is not permissible. Precaution demands that we abstain from consuming shrimps since there remains uncertainty in it being a fish. (Jaami’ Al-Fatawaa, vol 1, pg 376 / Kifaayat Al-Mufti, vol 9, pg 129 / Fatawaa Al-Mahmudiyya, vol 18, pg 216)
It is not be permissible to eat crabs since it is not classified as a fish.(Fatawaa Al-Mahmudiyya, vol 18, pg 267, Faruqiyya)

Assalamualaikum mawlana.
What I have come to know is previously it was thought to be impermissible in the indian subcontinent.
But now it is thought to be permissible.
One alim told me
1. When Mufti Taqi d.b. came to Bangladesh he ate them.
2. Mufti Kefayatullah ( Mufti Azam Hind ) Rah. once stood outside the masjid with shrimp in his hands and asked about a 100 people as to what he was carrying in his hand. They all answered that it was a fish. Mufti saab rah. hence declared it was a fish and permissible to eat.
All this came up when I came to know shrimps were on the menu for dinner at a madressa leaving ceremony of new farigh ulema, and I asked about the issue.
The madressa is run by Khulafa of Shaykh Abrarul Haq Hardoi rah.
Please correct me if Im wrong OR maybe its not permissible where your at.
Jazakumullah Khair.
Please maf any disrespect.

From what I know, crabs are NOT Halal in the Shafi'i school. Or at least, not the kind that are common in Maryland, because they can live outside of water.

Bismillah
As-salaamu 'alaikum,
Sidi Yahya
Is this common, i.e that crabs that we eat can live on land?
If so, then it will become impermissible for me to eat the crab unless i am sure that it's the halal ones.. sah? I'm not a big fan of crabs so i have not looked into it very deep.

does any madhab say you can eat land crabs?
Must the crabs live only in water for them to be halal, or can they live in both water and land?
Which is most common in restaurants and super markets, land or sea crab?
