Question TARAWIH PRAYER.....10 or 20 rakaats

Salmz, everyone and a ( bit of a late) 'Ramdhan Mubarak'
I hope and pray everyone reading this is in the best of health and Imaan, ameen

I was wondering how comes a lot of people read just 10 rakaats in Taraawih,
I noticed this the first time when I went to perform Umrah and was shocked to see that so many people around me fold their musallahs and and start making their way home after the first 10 rakaats.
Is it cos they follow a different Imaam???

Regarding this I was wondering if its ok for my younger sister to start off reading her Tarawih with 10 rakaats and gradually she will read full 20 Inshallah. It's a bit hard for her with her going school and with the fast being quite long.

And my last question is on certain days I feel very tired.Especially when its time for Tarawih which seems to start as soon as I finish eating, would it be ok to read just 4 farz 2 Sunnah and then start tarawih and read witr at the end rather than read all 17 rakaats of Isha.So basically is it ok to read just 9 rakaats of Isha aswell as tarawih)???

Thankyou so much for taking the time to read this,
I am awaiting your response very eagerly.
    Jazakallah-khair

Tarawih is a sunnah and if you are really very tired, do rest.

Some people follow the position that tarawih is 8 rakah and not 20. The relied upon position in the Hanafi school is 20.

I would recommend for your sister to do short rakah to help her with the tarawih, al-asr, al-kawther and al-nasr are the three shortest surahs she can do in each set.

Do everything in order, it helps.

It is 8 rakats of tarawih, not 10 at which some people leave. In the Hanafi madhhab, it is 20 rakats. Also, reading all 17 rakats of 'Isha is not a necessity. The only necessary rakats are the four fardh of 'Isha, 2 sunnah muakkadah, and the three witr salah. Everything else is either sunnah ghair-muakkadah or nafl and there is no sin upon you for missing these.

Tarawih itself is sunnah muakkadah. I have heard from Mufti Palanpuri (db) that 8 rakats of Tahajjud salah in Ramadhan is better than Tarawih. Allah knows best.

there is no sound position that taraweeh is 8 rkt.. It is salafi/ahle hadith concocted position.. All schools are muttafiq that taraweeh is 20 rakat.

    Conclusion

From this short treatiseon Taraweeh the following facts become quite clear: * After the era of Umar (R.A.) till the end of the 13th century the entire Muslim world performed 20 or more than 20 rakaats. If in this entire time period even a few people were of the opinion of less than 20 rakaats, then too there is no evidence of it being practiced in any Musjid.

    * Taraweeh is originally the Sunnat of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam).

    * Taraweeh in Jamaat in the Musjid is also originally the Sunnat of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). Hazrath Umar (R.A.) merely re-introduced this method on compliance to the desire of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam).

    * Following the Sunnah of the rightly guided Khalifas is in accordance to the comand of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam).

    * 20 rakaats taraweeh is clearly proven from the era of Umar (R.A.).

    * The books of fiqh of the 4 mazhabs written over the centuries clearly regard 20 rakaats taraweeh to be sunnah.

    * Those narrations used to prove 8 rakaats either don’t refer to taraweeh or don’t comply with the standards of authnticity.

We now leave it to you, dear reader to decide whether you wish to practice on what the Ummah has been practicing on for the last 14 centuries and to this day is being practiced in musjidul Haram in Makkah and Madina or take the short cut route by practicing on 8 rakaats as proposed by the Ahle Hadith sect which has only reared its head recently.

Default Shaykh Bin-Baaz (RA) on Rakaat of Taraweeh

    Asslamo Allaikum,

Here is the small print which those condemn 20 Rakaat fail to act upon and leave in droves at the end of 8 Rakaat.

    ...Continuing from above

"In sets of two, in sets of two. Then when one of you fears the coming of morning, he prays one (Rak'ah) that will serve as a Witr (i.e. make the number odd) of what he has prayed." [Al-Bukhari no. 990 and Muslim no. 749]

The authenticity of this Hadith has been agreed upon.

He (the Prophet ) did not fix a specific number of Rak'ahs, neither in Ramadhan nor in any other times. For this reason, the Companions (radhiyaAllaahu anhuma) sometimes prayed 23 Rak'ahs, and sometimes 11 Rak'ahs in the time of Umar (radhiyaAllaahu anh). All of that has been confirmed from Umar and the Companions in his time. [...off course we disagree but read on...]

Some of the Salaf used to pray 36 Rak'ahs during Ramadhan and then pray three Rak'ahs of Witr prayer. Some of them prayed 41 Rak'ahs. Shaykhul-Islam ibn Taymiyyah mentioned this from them and that the matter concerning this is broad (i.e. easy). He also mentioned that it is better for whoever lengthens his recitation, bowing and prostrating to lessen the number of Rak'ahs, and whoever lightens (shortens) the recitation, bowing and prostrating, to increase the number of Rak'ahs. This is the meaning of his statement, may Allah have mercy on him.

Whoever pays close attention to his (the Prophet's) Sunnah will know that what is best in regard to all of this is to pray 11 or 13 Rak'ahs during Ramadhan and other times. This is because that is in agreement with the practice of the Prophet in most of his situations (i.e. what he usually did). Also, this is easier for those who are offering prayer and better for humility and tranquility (in the prayer). Whoever prays more, there is no harm in that nor any dislike, as was mentioned previously. What is best for whoever prays with the Imam (of the Masjid) in the night prayer of Ramadhan is that he does not stop until the Imam stops praying. This is due to the statement of the Prophet :

"Verily, if the man stands for night prayer with the Imam until he finishes, Allah will write for him (the reward of) standing the entire night (in prayer)."

[Abu Dawud 1375, At-Tirmidhee no. 806, Ibn Maajah no. 1327 and Ahmad 5:159.]

Until approximately two hundred years ago there were no two answers to this question. Every person until this time unanimously agreed that it is TWENTY RAKAATS. Around the twelfth century, a group calling itself the Ahle Hadith emerged and began propagating the fallacy that Tarawee is only eight Rakaats. Recently small groups, in order to cast aside the following of one of the four Madhabs, have begun blindly following the so-called Ahle Hadith. Hence not only do they deprive themselves from the rewards of the entire TWENTY RAKAATS, they also mislead others who are unaware of the facts and deprive them as well.

At the same time those of weak Imaan who find the TWENTY RAKAATS difficult due to their fanciful interpretations, their laziness and lack of realization of the tremendous rewards and blessings of Tarawee, have found a scapegoat in the baseless propaganda of the Ahle Hadith and its followers. The reality however, is that TWENTY RAKAATS of Tarawee is Sunnatul Mua'kkadah (a greatly stressed Sunnah, deliberate omission of which is a sin).
    ALL UNANIMOUS
During the time of our Beloved Nabee Muhammad Sallallahoo Alayhi Wasallam, the TARAWEEH SALAAT was performed individually and in small groups. Our Nabee Sallallahoo Alayhi Wasallam stressed its performance but did not performit with the congregation since he feared that it may become Fard (compulsory) upon the Ummah. In one narration, it is nevertheless mentioned that our Beloved Nabee Sallallahoo Alayhi Wasallam performed TWENTY RAKAATS of Tarawee and the Witr in Ramadan. (Musannad Ibn Abi Shaiba and Bayhaqi). This practice of performing Tarawee individually and in small groups continued in the time of Sayyidina Abu Bakr Radhiallahu Anhu and in the initial years of the Khilaafat of Sayyidina Umar Radhiallahu Anhu. Thereafter Hadhrat Umar Radhiallahu Anhu appointed Ubayy ibn Kaab Radhiallahu Anhu as the Imaam and gathered everybody in one Jama'ah behind him for the performance of the FULL TWENTY RAKAATS of Tarawee. At that time there were numerous Sahaabah Radhiallahu Anhum present. All of them agreed on this decision of Hadhrat Umar Radhiallahu Anhu. If this decision was contrary to Din, the illustrious Sahaabah Radhiallahu Anhum would never have tolerated it. Their consensus on this matter is itself Sharee proof of TWENTY RAKAATS being a Sunnah. A number of narrations mention the performance of TWENTY RAKAATS by the Shahaabah Radhiallahu Anhum. Therefore, we find that the four great Imaams of the four Madhabs, despite a number of minor differences among them on the interpretation and application of various aspects are unanimous that Tarawee is TWENTY RAKAATS. This is authentically recorded in their books.
    HARAMAYN
The aspect of Tarawee is really as clear as daylight. Therefore, one will find that in the Haramayn of Makkatul Mukarramah and Madinah Al Munawwarah up to this day, from the very time of Hadhrat Umar Radhiallahu Anhu, TWENTY RAKAATS are performed in Jama'ah. The Sahaabah Radhiallahu Anhum, the Taabi'een (those who came after the Sahaabah Radhiallahu Anhum), the Imaams of Fiqh (jurisprudence) and the entire Ummah, with the exception of the so-called Ahle Hadith of recent times, have been unanimous on TWENTY RAKAATS.
    YOUR DECISION
Finally, in one Hadith - our Beloved Nabee Sallallahoo Alayhi Wasallam is reported to have said:
"After me there will be much differences. Hence hold on to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided Khulafa." (Mishkaat).
TWENTY RAKAATS of Tarawee with Jama'ah was the Sunnah of the rightly guided Khulafaa. In this latter day difference, whom will you follow? The Sunnah of the rightly guided Khulafaa of our Beloved Nabee Muhammad Sallallahoo Alayhi Wasallam or the way of those who contradict them????You make the decision!
A DECEIT CANNOT IMITATE THE SUNNAH
A deceit cannot imitate the Sunnah. The effect of Sunnah is spiritual reality, which the deceit can never acquire. The difference between a deceit and a true follower of the Sunnah will become manifest by observation.

Question Re: TARAWIH PRAYER.....10 or 20 rakaats

17 rakaats of Isha? Which school?
    I thought Esha had only 6 Rakaats (4 Rakats Farz + 2 Raka'ats Sunnat-e-Muaqqadah). If 4 Rak'ats Sunnat-Ghair-e-Muaqqadah is counted, then total 10 Rakats.
