Default Sharh Aqeedah al-Tahawiyyah by Ibn 'Izz Al-Hanafi

    [CENTER]Sharh Aqeedah al-Tahawiyyah

By Ibn Abi al-Izz. Commentary by Allamah Ibn 'Izz Al-Hanafi on Imam Tahawi's Al-Aqeedah At-Tahawiyah. About the Author: A Hanafi Jurist, born in Taha (that's where Tahawi came from), a town in Upper Egypt. Both of his parents were learned and attended Imam Ash-Shafai's lectures. Became a Hadith scholar, but also developed an interest in Hanafi Fiqh. Thus, he was both-- a Muhaddith and a Faqih. He wrote many books, mostly on Fiqh. Compiled a brief list of Core Beliefs of Ahl-al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah, now known as Sharh al-'Aqidah at-Tahawiyyah. Imam At-tahawi said about this compilation: "This is a presentation of the beliefs of ahl-al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah..."

    Assalamu 'alaykum

This Sharh is a misrepresentation on the beliefs of Ahlus Sunnah Wa'l Jama'ah. Ibn Abil Izz al-Hanafi (rah) may have been somewhat Hanafi in Fiqh, but that does not mean in any way he was Hanafi in Aqeedah. The way you can find out how his commentary is contrary to the majority of the 'Ulama, is by looking at the classical Shuruh that were done.

This Sharh has become a favourite to our Salafi/Wahhabi brethren nowadays.

    Wallahu A'lam.

I agree. The teachers that I have studied with have said that Ibn Al Izz Al-Hanafi's commentary is NOT representative of the Ahlus Sunnah beliefs and therefore should not be read. Mulla Ali Qari's sharh is said to be one of the best commentaries.

Don't you mean Mulla Ali al-Qari's commentary of al-Fiqh al-Akbar?
Sahabah رضي الله عنهم would cling fast to the Sunnah, on account of it being Sunnah, while we discard the Sunnah, on account of it being (just) Sunnah!

    Why was my post edited?

    For bro Abdullah Abbas:
    - born in 645 A.H. and belonged to a town, Dir'a, near Damascus.
    - Belonged to a family of scholars and judges; a follower of Hanafi madhab.
    - He met Ibn Taymiyyah, Adh-Dhahabi, Ibn Al-Qayyim and Ibn Katheer.
    - He was imprisoned because of his objections to certain wording of an ode in praise of the Prophet (peace be upon him). He was also convicted because of some other beliefs that were not concurrent with norm and Sultan’s viewpoints.
    - In this commentary, Ibn Abi Al-‘Izz make Qur’an and Sunnah as his primary source and takes them at their literal value and avoids metaphorical understanding if there is no proof.
    - In the commentary, he does not differentiate between essential and active attributes of Allah, meaning Allah is not only Living and Powerful, but also creating things and providing for them.
