Salam,
I have heard that only ahl kitab are permitted to live in a muslim country under muslim rulership so why is it that when the muslims controlled india, they allowed the hindus to remain and continue practising hinduism?

W'Salaam, that's according to a certain opinion, according to others, other religious groups may reside. Read Mufti Shafi Usmaani's tafseer on ayah 9:29

Who are the 'others' you write of?
What I'm saying is that some scholars have held the opinion that only ahle kitab and majus can reside in DarulIslam, while other scholars have differed saying that other religious groups may reside in DarulIslam and pay Jizyah.

salam alaikm warahmatullah
I know thats what you said.
But who are these 'some scholars' and 'other scholars'.

Well, don't quote me on this, but I think the Hanafi position is the position that othe religious groups may reside in DaralIslam, I have read that somewhere. In M'aariful Qur'an, it says the same exact thing, it says the vast majority of scholars hold this position.

That would make sense since the rulers of india were hanafis.
