Hazrat Shaykh Muhammad Al Yacobi (db) is most definately Hanafi, he has a great amount of knowledge in the Maliki and Shafi schools as well. I think you maybe referring to Hazrat Shaykh Nuh Kellar (db) who is a Shafi in practice but has an emmense knowledge in Hanafi Fiqh.

    As Salamu Alaykum

It was relayed to me a year ago that Sh Muhammad switched to Maliki because of a dream he had of his father Shaykh Ibrahim al Yaqoubi (rahimullah). No one to this date has given me a straight answer. The person who told me the story was a Maliki, so I'm taking it with a grain of salt.

I need to know of people who are currently studying with him or have seen him recently whether or not it is true.

The default assumption until there is evidence to prove that story is true is Sh Muhammad is a Hanafi (he mastered Maliki fiqh from his father so he does know both).

    Wa Llahu Alim
Imam ash-Shafi`i said, "Whoever takes knowledge from books loses the regulations." (man akhadha al-`ilma min al-kutubi Dayya`a al-aHkaama). [Reported by Nawawi in the introduction to "al-Majmu`"]

I can assure you that he is a Hanafi Scholar. And even if he was a practising Maliki what would be the problem with that?

One student of the Shaykh's confirmed to me that he is now a Maliki like his Shaykh - Sayyid Fatih al-Kattani of Damascus.

Whatever his Maddhab, his lectures are excellent .
"Whoever acts upon what he knows, Almighty Allah bestows upon him
the knowledge of things not known to him"
(Fazaa'il-e-A'maal, Virtues of the Holy Qur'an, Part 1, under Hadith 8)
