Your help is urgently required brothers and sisters. This is absolutely devastating. Our Muslims who are in need all over the world are going to be affected by Barclays decision to close UWT's account.

Please act now, and do something... be it phoning barclays, emailing them or even by spreading the word.

Listen live to Radiohajj.com. Deep discussion taking place on barclays bank closing UWT's account.

It's not as simple as changing banks. Many people have set up standing orders... it's complicated. Listen into the discussion, UWT are explaining their case.

    Can you give a synopsis?

This sucks, I use UWT almost exclusively while away from home.

Barclays just opened up for business in Pakistan and has been advertising everywhere, if they go ahead with this I'm going to try and spread the word about them closing Islamic charities for no reason.

Basically, the Maulana who was speaking on behalf of UWT was saying, they recieved a 30 day notice in a letter from Barclays saying that their accounts will be closed. Barclays Bank gave no apparent reason as to why they were doing this. They even stated that if they were asked for a reason, they would not have to give one.

Maulana was saying this will affect all of us, because we carry out our Islamic obligations like giving our zakat, qurbani through Ummah welfare trust. (Please note UWT are still carrying on their work as normal, so please continue giving them your donations).

UWT has not done anything which would be a reason for the bank to close their accounts. They have always been in credit... charities are actually the most realiable as they always have money.

    We are all asked to ring barclays on: 0800 282 390 / 0207 116 7488

Ask them (politely) for the reason behind UWT's account closure and inform them that you and your associates will be closing your accounts if the decision is not immediately reversed. Be very firm... carry on ringing if they refuse to give any answer to your queries. Today it is UWT's account, tomorrow it may be our own personal accounts.

Email Barclays Business Manager: Mr. Columb O'shea: columb.oshea@barclays.com and Mr. John Varley: john.varley@barclays.com

Barclays bank have giving them 30 days notice. Please be aware that the holiday period is within these 30-days, hence Maulana said they have less time to do anything. Obviously this was deliberate of barclays, and this is utterly disgraceful.

E-mail them continueously so that when they re-open their banks on Monday, they will have an influx of e-mails to deal with.

Maulana said it's not as easy as changing banks, people have direct debits, standing orders set up with UWT... all these people will have to be contacted... it's a long and lengthy process and besides that we have no guarantee that the other banks will not do the same thing. We've already heard that Lloyds TSB are closing Interpal's accounts, so which banks to we bank with?

It is everyone's duty to do something today. E-mail, phone barclays, and spread the word.

UWT are urging all people from Leicester to meet them today at the highfields barclays bank and demand from Barclays answers as to why they are closing their accounts. Take your account books with you and wave them in the air, and say you will also close your barclays account if UWT's account is not reinstated.

regards switching banks i think you need a clearing bank to go through. so long as your with one of the major banks it should be ok (besides the issue of changes d.debits etc which is pain stacking).

Even small banks such as IBB though a bank itself still needs to go through a UK clearing bank who can still then bar any company it wants without explanation even though its banking through another bank.

Bank closes account of charity linked to Hamas
    9:40am Thursday 1st January 2009

    By Staff Reporter »

A BOLTON charity which faces having its bank account closed has links to terrorist organisations, it has emerged.

It is believed Barclays is closing the Bolton-based Ummah Welfare Trust account because it was indirectly helping to fund the Palestinian organisation Hamas — branded a terrorist organisation by Israel, the USA and the EU.

The charity has donated more than £200,000 to charity Interpal, which is seen as a Hamas front by the US Treasury and has been banned in the USA, Canada and Australia since 2003. Interpal is the subject of a current Charity Commission investigation over alleged improper links to Hamas.

Hamas has widespread popularity in Palestine and won the Palestinian Authority’s general elections in January, 2006. It is seen by its supporters as a legitimate fighting force defending Palestinians from a military occupation.

But much of the western world sees Hamas as an extremist group that resorts to terror tactics to achieve its aims.

UWT last night defended its support for Interpal, saying donations to the Hamas-linked charity were the only way to provide help for stricken Palestinians.

Iqbal Rawat, a founder of UWT which is based in Derby Street, Bolton, said: “Barclays will not give us a reason for why they are closing the account, but the only thing that we can think is because we have donated money to Interpal.

“I feel this is very unfair. If Barclays did not want us to help certain organisations, then they should have told us that.

“Interpal is doing work in Palestine and people need a lot of help over there, we should not just abandon them.”

UWT is also linked to the Al Salah Society, which one US Treasury official has described as an organisation which Hamas has used “to finance its terrorist agenda”.

Lloyds TSB is in the process of closing Interpal’s UK accounts.

UWT is protesting about the move by Barclays to close its account, and other Muslim organisations are now calling for Lloyds and Barclays to be boycotted.

Qasim Rafiq, of the Federation of Student Islamic Societies, said: “UWT is one of the few UK-based charities that has been at the forefront of providing essential relief work in politically sensitive regions, and the impact will be felt by the thousands who desperately rely on the resources and aid provided by UWT.

“Such actions send out the wrong message to the Muslim community and set a dangerous precedent.”

Barclays has refused to discuss why it is closing the UWT account.
