Default What is the ruling on men wearing silk?

I had previously heard from Hanafis of the subcontintent that up to four fingers width of silk was permitted for men to wear.....

I would like to confirm this from others here - is that just a minority opinion in our Madhab?

I came across the following from the Malikis:

As for what is known as khazz, it is a garment whose warp
(lengthwise thread) is silk, and whose woof (widthwise thread) is
wool. There are three opinions concerning it amongst the Maalikees:
    1- Permissible (Ibnul-Arabee), 2-Disliked (Ibn Rushd), and 3-
Forbidden (Al-Qaraafee and the apparent view of Imam Malik).
What supports this final view is the hadeeth of the Prophet wherein
he says of a companion by the name of Ataarid who used to sell khazz
in the market place, "Only those who have no portion in the Hereafter
    wear this."

According to many scholars, the garments sold by Ataarid
were a mixture of wool and silk. However, some narrations state that
they were pure silk. In such a case, the statement of the Prophet
would be directed towards the sale of pure silk. And this is why the
    scholars disagree.

As for badges of silk on ones clothing, there is agreement that if
the size of the silk badge is equal to the size (in width) of a
finger of the average human being then it is permissible. But they
differ with regard to more than that up to 4 fingers. Some say that
from 1 to 4 is permissible. Others say that from 2 to 4 is disliked.
As for more than 4 fingers width, they all agree that it is
    forbidden to wear.

    Abdullah

The other point is regarding the silk of today - is it the same silk as that of the past or is it some sort of artificial blend?
Imam al-Zarqani said in his book Manahil al-Irfan: 'Our Scholars agreed that if a word carries 99 aspects of disbelief and one aspect of faith, it must be interpreted according to the best of meanings, which is faith'.

And some hadith in this regard.......

`Umar ibn al-Khattab said, "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade the wearing of silk, except for the area of two fingers, or three, or four." [Muslim]

Ibn `Abbas said, "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) only prohibited the wearing of a garment of uniform silk. As for a silken badge, or the warp of a garment, there is no objection to it." [Abu Dawud]
Imam al-Zarqani said in his book Manahil al-Irfan: 'Our Scholars agreed that if a word carries 99 aspects of disbelief and one aspect of faith, it must be interpreted according to the best of meanings, which is faith'.

Huzaifah (Radhiallaahu Anhu) narrates that nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) prohibited us from eating and drinking in utensils of pure gold and silver and wearing garments of silk.(Sahih Bukhari; Fathul Bari pg.291vol 10)

There are some narrations of Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) that Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) allowed wearing silk to the amount of the index and middle finger. (Bukhari pg.284 vol.10)

The Jurists have ruled that is the limit for the breadth of the silk cloth.

However it is best for men to abstain from wearing silk. Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said in one hadith whoever adorns himself with silk in this world, he shall be deprived of silken garments in the hereafter. (Mishkaat pg 174 Darul Arqam)

If ties are from real silk (=that which is produced from the thread of silkworms), then they are not permitted to be worn or sold. While the Hanafi school permits a certain amount of silk in clothes, this is only if it is not entirely or overwhelming made fro m silk, such as silk piping or embroidery. Entire items, such as silk ties, are not permitted. [Naf` al-Mufti wa’l Sa’il of Imam Abdal-Hayy al-Lakhnawi]

ive heard from elders that wearing anything for women, will affect a mans hormones, similarly wearing animal skins ,will affect the wearer according to the animal, kind of a rubbing off affect,
The reason for all trouble on earth, is that people have lost sight of their Lord’s Will behind all events. They have lost sight of the hand of the One Who is testing them through those events. They have stopped seeing events as tests from their Lord. Therefore they continue failing those tests. "

They still use 'real' silk, apparently.

Silk, fiber produced as a cocoon covering by the silkworm, and valuable for its use in fine fabrics and textiles. The silkworm, in fact, is not a worm but a caterpillar. Although cocoon coverings of fiber are made by a large number of insects, only those of the mulberry silk moth, Bombyx mori, and a few other moths closely akin to it, are used by the silk industry.
