Default Islam Today: Is it truly what Muhammad [SAW]and his Companions Practiced

    As Salaam Alaykum,

I've read many Islamic books and I am not convinced that Islam as it is taught today is exactly what Prophet Muhammad and Companions actually practiced and believed. Like Ashari/Maturidi Aqidah, these schools really don't represent the Aqidah of Prophet Muhammad and His Companions but rather, the Aqidah of later scholars of Islam. The belief that the Quran is uncreated, is not the belief of Muhammad and His Companions, in fact we do not know what Prophet Muhammad and His Companions truly believed in this regard. So how can we say with certainty that the Ashari/Maturidi schools of Aqidah truly represent the Aqidah of Muhammad and His Companions, when the belief of that the Quran uncreated cannot be abolutely proven to be the belief of that early community.

If it is cannot proven with absolute certainty that it is belief of the Prophet Muhammad and Companions, why must those who choose not to believe in it are considered disbeliever (refer to Aqidah Tahawi), simply because the choose not to believe in it?

The same can be said in regards to issue related to fiqh and tasawwuf for that matter.

    Salam,

salam, if the above are not true to the deen of the prophet sallAllah and those who followed, then i don't know what else is.

the schools of 'aqida, fiqh and tasawwuf are all scholarly commentaries of the quran and sunnah and that is how our understanding of the deen has been preserved by Allah, alhmdLillah.

Yes it is the scholars comments on the Quran and Sunnah, but how do you know if that understanding is correct. I think modern day scholars have deified the previous scholars. It is like they acknowledge that scholars can make mistakes, but still insist that we follow a position that may not absolutely be the truth, but consider it the truth based on a so-called consensus (ijma). And there isn't a consensus (ijma) on the definition of consensus (imja), that's why I say so-called.

unlike jews and christians we do not "deify" meaning we do not listen to them if what they say is contrary to what is in the books.
we revere our ppl of knowledge, there is a clear difference.
scholars can make mistakes and that's why there are many scholars around who can refute the mistakes.
but if 100 scholars agree on a thing and 1 disagrees, it's most likely that the latter is wrong.

    Respected Brother,

Our religion has been preserved generation after generation by the God fearing scholars of this Ummah. They have worked very hard to ensure that the religion that has been passed down to us is exactly what our beloved Prophet :SAW: and his companions RH practiced.

I would highly recommend that you read the following book. It will instill in you the love, respect, and admiration of our scholars because of the sacrifices and hard work they endured to preserve our religion.

Saviours of Islamic Spirits (3 Volumes)
by Sheikh Abu al-Hasan Ali al-Nadwi

In life there is usually never an easy/short answer to any worthwhile question. Therefore, investing some time reading this book will be very helpful, inshallah.

Adi Ibn Hatim (ra), reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) reciting the Quranic verse:

" They have taken their rabbis and their monks as lords beside Allah and [they take as a lord] Al-Maseeh, Isa, the son of Maryam, yet they were not commanded but to worship One God: None has the right to be worshipped but He - Praise and Glory to Him: [Far is He] from having the partners they associate [withHim]" (Qur'an 9:31)

"...and I said to him : "We don't worship them." He said: "Do they not forbid what Allah has permitted and do you not then forbid it (to yourselves), and do they not make permissible for you what Allah has forbidden, and do you not then make it permissible (to yourselves)?" I replied: "Certainly!" He said: "That is worshipping them." (Narrated by At-Tirmidhi, who graded it as Hasan)

    Reflect on the above:

The Jews and Christians are counted among those who took their scholars as Lord beside Allah when they followed, what their scholars had made permissible that which Allah had made forbidden and vis a verse a.
So let us take the issue I mentioned above. The Quran or the Speech of Allah is Uncreated.

Allah says in the Quran, “Say, The things that my Lord has indeed forbidden are … saying things about Allah of which you have no knowledge.” (7:33)
Knowledge of the unseen comes from two sources, Quran and Sunnah. And nowhere in the Quran and Sunnah does it specifically say that the Quran or the Speech of Allah is uncreated, yet the scholars of Islam have made it required for Muslims to believe in this and had condemned those who refused to believe in it.

This is an example of scholars saying things about Allah which they have no knowledge. (The Quran or Speech of Allah is uncreated) And then requiring the Muslims to believe in it yet Surah 7:33 has forbidden the Muslim for saying things about Allah which they have no knowledge.

    So please explain this example.

    Still no answer. Hmmmm.

    Here is another question.

How does knowing the answer to question, "Is the Speech of Allah (or Quran) created or not?" benefit or hinder my attaining paradise (Jannah)?

Because I don't really know why the scholars made or make such a big issue about this topic where one is either labeled a zindiq (heretic) or a kafir (disbeliever) for not holding the Sunni position on it.

these are all points of 'aqida which weren't around at the time of the prophet sallAllah but had to be written down later because of the rubbish coming out of groups like the mu'tazila, shi'a and ppl who had studied greek philosophy.

the sahaba with their grasp of arabic and around the prophet sallAllah took all these points for granted. they didn't have to think about them.

the analogy is like being a native english speaker where you don't think about grammar rules, but the foreigner must learn them consciously to master the language.

    wallahu a'lam

I hear yeah, but I think I have enough evidence in the Quran to justify not following the scholars on the Last Day (The Day of Judgment). All I have to say is, "the sunni/shia scholars wanted me to say things about You, my Lord, which could be confirmed 100% in Your book nor could it be confirmed by the words of Your Beloved Messenger Muhammad (SAW)."

    That will be my case.

    And Allah knows best.
