Default Is music haram in Islam??

    salamo aleykom

I know that some music are rubbish and I understand that they are haram in nature( like 50 cent, beyonce, you name it).
but I was wondering wheather classical music, wich only relaxing instruments are used if they are haram too?
if so, how about sufis who use music and dance in that whirling style?

could someone clarify this point for me.

    و علسكم السلام

You can please read this fatwa http://www.askimam.org/fatwa/fatwa.p...6fe7410490d54a

The main point is that musical instruments are haram, with exception of the daff, a special kind of drum, which can only be played on certain occassions, such as wedding, during an Eid, etc.

It was hard for me to believe when I read this fatwa but if its in the way of Allah I believe we must abandon even the slightest of things with tones.
And I have been reading on this too in-depth islam section which has abundance of topics mashallah with very good content where our brothers answer these questions in depth and with references such as the link. you should go to in-depth section and list all thraeds from beginning.

    Assalamualaikum Br. Abu Hajira,

I understand Mufti Desai's position is that the Duff should also be used judiciously only on ocassions like to announce a wedding for example, so is it deemed to be impermissible to listen to anasheed which have duff in the background?

The reason I ask is because even within scholars of the Hanafi there appears to be a disagreement on the duff and whether it is permissible to use in anasheed since I have received differing answers on this issue.

Yes, it is...and I say this with the backing of the Ijmaa' of this Ummah on it being Haram.

I want to add two points:

    1. Imam al-Ghazali's writings on this matter are usually misunderstood and/or misrepresented. Some time ago, I studied this great Imam's books to see what he has written on music and I wrote a long article (in Turkish) demonstrating that he (like other imams) considers music (with instruments) haram in general, allowed only in specific cases and then only with specific instruments (like "daf" in weddings or in battle to encourage the soldiers etc.)

    2. Ibn Hazm's shazz opinions on music have been rejected by scholars. For example, Ibn Hajar al-Makki and Ibn Salah criticise and reject Ibn Hazm's opinion on music.

PS. There are a number of articles on music in my blog. Those who can read Turkish may find them useful. I have also started to collect the hadiths on the subject here (also in Turkish):

Perhaps, in the future, I will have time to translate these to English.

    salamu alaykum,

Like I said where there is a will, theres a way. With a bit of research anything can be made to look Halaal. Its surprising that Haraam actions can even be made to look as if it is encouraged to do. Obviously at a different level but just make the point that people if desperate enough can find and twist evidences to support their actions, there is a group of perverts who say it is ok to be gay and they produce evidence from Quran, astaghfirullah.
