The original position was that of permissibility, however due to undue importance being given to something which is merely mubah (and not "highly praiseworthy")... AND because of the continuous inclusion of practices which do not befit such events, Ulama have revoked general permissibility of Mawlid. This is seen from the different conditions that are placed with this event.
