I still feel uncomfortable with playing anything that awaits a random 'chance' of numbers... but that's just me I guess.
    W-Salam,

    Picture these scenario.

You go into a bank to open an account and they give you a shiny ATM card and a Keypad and ask you to choose 4 random numbers as your "PIN". You then use your "PIN" to get money out of your account. Thats a use of random numbers without a DICE which is obviously permissable.

Randomisation of numbers has vast implications in PKI and in setting codes...please also read:

DICE on the other hand is specifically prohibited in Ahadeeth and has connotations associated with gambling.

Random numbers are just that they can be used for EVIL (gambling) or for GOOD (PIN on your ATM card) or password to logon to Sunniforum etc.

    Wa `alaykum as-salam:

While I understand that this is a Hanafi question and answer, I want to give the Maliki view. Sidi Omar HH mentioned that he asked Shaykh Abu`l Qanit al-Hasani who said it was makruh but Shaykh Rami Nsour said it was haram.

And thus..... I'll leave it there

    Wassalam

DICE is specifically mentioned in Ahadeeth while randomisation of numbers is just a mathematical phenomenon.

If Randomisation itself was Haram then various sciences would have been impermissable.

I hope that clears things up.
So according to the hanafis there are no rational reasons (ta'abbud) for the prohibition against dices, and thats why you dont make qiyas?

Is there any fatwa allowing a spinner or something similar instead of dices?
