Default The Deobandi Elders: Info sought

    Assalamu Alaykum,

I'm not from a Deobandi background and have very limited knowledge of the elders such as Shaykh al-Nanotawi, Shaykh al-Gangohi, Shaykh Ali al-Thanawi etc, rahmat'Allahi alayhim. I'm looking for (preferably) online sources to get aquainted with them insha'Allah, and thought I'd ask their admirers as to what they would recommend. If possible something like biographies would ultimately be the best.

And yeah, it would have to be in English.

    wassalam

For online reading the best would be:

    Pearls of the Elders
Excerpts from the biographies, sayings and writings of the ‘Ulama of Deoband

    Deoband.org
Shar'ia, Tariqa, Adherence to the Sunnah and Love for the Prophet

Links to more of brief Biographies:

    http://books.themajlis.net/node/449
    http://www.central-mosque.com/biographies/index.htm

As well check the scroll on the right of the following website:

    http://www.thedefendersoftruth.com

    Hope this helps.

Here are some but you should also do the same for some Arab scholars who are literally unknown to indo-pak muslims whereas they were true gems.

    Assalamu Alaykum,

Jazak'Allahu khayran brothers. I appreciate it.

Sidi, what Arab scholars are you thinking of?
Yes alhamdulillah, there have been many hidden gems in the Arab lands. I would consider myself a follower of Arab scholarship.

    wassalam

I think he means those Arab scholars who were the Ahl al Haq 'Ulama of the Arab lands and were true gems but are virtually unknown outside of the Arab world.

    Assalamu Alaykum sidi,

I understood that much, but I was thinking more if there were anyones in particular that he wanted to be highlighted. Or was he refering to me specifically to read up on these (arab) ulama?

But i know very little about the Deobandi Akabir apart from the general controversies etc, that's why the thread.

But I am all for Arab ulama

Ooo now I get it. I thought he kinda meant, "Don't just read about Indo-Pak scholars, read up on Arab gems", but I thought maybe misunderstanding on my part, which it was alhamdulillah. Didn't understand that it was in the link.

actually my english is not that clear sorry. I just thought you could post some biography of some renowned arab scholars that are unknown to us since (I assume) you know their heritage better.

For example I just found this amazing shaykh: Al Shaikh Muhammad Badr al Deen al Hasani.

Also, he used to explain the Qur'aan by heart from al Baydaawi's Tafseer (explanation of the Qur'aan). His ijaazah was especially besought by Hadeeth scholars for being the closest one of his age to the Prophet Salla'l Laahu `Alaihi Wa Sallam (counting the number of men in the chain).

Doctors and engineers who attended his classes used to say: We exhausted our life learning our profession, and he knows it more than us.

He was also instrumental in the organization of the revolution against the French occupation.
Some of you may have known about him but I'm sure not much muslims know about him (not counting "salafis" for whom Islam is restricted to shuyukh Ibn Baaz, utheymeen, al albaani(rahimahumullah), rabee', fawzaan, aale shaykh...).

    check out this site: http://sunnifiles.wordpress.com/

it is pretty new so it may not have a ton of stuff
but if you check back later
Insha Allah it will be a little more complete
but you can find lots of links to Deobandi madaris around the world,
and they might have links to articles about the akabir
