This 3-hour workshop (including break and question-answer session) will examine the issue from an academic study of the classical Islamic sources, respectfully steering clear of the extremist polemics on this issue from both sides.

About the speaker:

Shaykh Mufti Kamaluddin Ahmed is currently a professor of Islamic Law and Spirituality at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and a visiting faculty member of Islamic Ethics at Aga Khan University (AKU). Born and raised in Manhattan (New York City), Shaykh Kamaluddin studied Arabic & Islamic Civilization, Political Science, and Law at the University of Chicago, Columbia University, and the University of London. Additionally, he spent many years studying religious knowledge from traditional scholars in Pakistan and possesses formal authorizations in a number of Islamic Sciences including tafsir of the Qur'an, narration and explanation of Hadith, and the transmission of legal opinion (Ifta). Shaykh Kamaluddin was also formally authorized in the science of Islamic spirituality (Tasawwuf) by Shaykh Zulfiqar Ahmad.
