When do we say Allahu-Akbar at the beginning of the prayer when praying behind an imam?
a) While he says it (i.e. concurrently)
b) After he has finished saying it
c) We don't say it at all and just make the motion with the hand

Wa 'alaykumus Salam
It's Fard to say Allahu Akbar, otherwise the prayer hasn't begun, and thus one still has to pray it.
I think the Mu'tamid position is to say it after the Imam, but definitly not before the Imam.
May Allah reward you.
Can someone please clarify what else the follower needs to repeat silently to himself?
Do we repeat Allah-u-Akbar when going down to ruku, going down to sajda, sitting up, standing up, and the salams at the end of the prayer while praying behind an imam?

I think these questions by the brother signify one of the bigger issues that is there for those of us who recently took up a Madhab, and sometimes even for those who have been on a Madhab for a long time:
The fact that some essential things are not explained in the common manuals to prayer, so we are confused when we encounter certain situations in our prayers, especially the congregational ones. Especially in this age when there is a lot of intermingling between ourselves, Salafis, and people of different Madhabs in the Masajids, knowing what has to be done in many different situations is essential.

I asked this question to an Hanafi Alim once, and he told me to that the muqtadi (the follower) reads everything except taawuz, basmala, fathia, qiraat, and tasmi. Thus all off the takbiraat would be included. Also, if the Imam reads Qunoot in fajr, we would also stay silent during that (not sure about the permissability of ameen during the dua).
There are also two hadiths mentioned in Bukhari where Rasul :saws: tells us to say takbir when the imam says takbir.

The follower needs to read the following while behind an Imam.
Allah-u-Akbar (the first takbeer)
Thana’(after placing hands in position - only at start of prayer)
Ameen (softly) when imam ends Surah Fatiha i.e. recites "Walad daaleen" (only in audible prayers)
Allah-u-Akbar (while going into rukuh)
Tasbih - Subhana-rab-il-azeem (while in rukuh)
When the Imam says "Sami' Allahu liman hamida"
the muqtadi (follower) should say "Rabbana lakal Hamd" (while rising from rukuh)
Allah-u-Akbar (while going in to sajdah)
Tasbih - Subhana-rab-il-Aa'la (while in sajdah)
Allah-u-Akbar (while getting up from sajdah)
Tashahhud - While sitting after the second rakat
Allah-u-Akbar - while getting up from tashahhud
and in last sitting after reciting tashahhud, Durood ibrahim and dua.

Jazakallah brother mff and others. That was very useful.
Taslim means salaam?
