Clarification of AskImam bank job fatwa

I see that AskImam and others classify bank and insurance jobs into haraam and makhruh depending upon the level of direct assistance to sin.

Now can we eat at people's places whose job/income is classified as makhruh? Please this is important - jazakAllah. What are the implications if one's job/income is makhruh?

Is it permissible to eat at a close family's home if he works for an insurance company and he sells insurance.

The income derived from the sale of insurance is Haraam. Therefore, avoid eating at his home.

In doing so, you should apply wisdom and diplomacy as the person is a close relative. The good relationship may be used as an opportunity to advise him to change his source of income.

This part I understand - that when it is direct assistance to sin like selling insurance then it is haraam and one should not eat at their house. However my question is when the person does not sell insurance but works in the HR department or accounting department or customer service department - whose involvement is indirect and AskImam classifies that income as makhruh. Can we eat then?

I had a similar situation and when I tried to reach a scholar regarding this issue, I was told the below two points to be considered. However, the scholar may not be the most accurate source of inquiry, needless wish to share.

1. The nature of your job should be Halal. Pornography, Coding / programming interest, preparing Liqour etc are a few examples of Haram nature of job.

2. Even if the nature of your job is Halal[permissible] like accounting, HR, product support etc then the firm that you are on the pay-roll off must have more than half of thier earning by Halal means of business i.e. you may be a clearner[Halal job] but if you are working for and getting paid by a Beer Bar, then defenatily more than half of the Beer Bar's earnings is not by Halal means and thus it stands impermissible to work for them.

I would advice you to reach out to AskImam or DarulIftaa and put forward your very specific query.

Also note: Fatwa can be different for different situations and personalities. Thus its best to have a Mufti in close relationship to yourself and your family.

Could you kindly back up the claim?
From what I knew, it was no concern (in terms of permissibility) how your employer earned his money as long as your job in particular was halal (example, a cleaner).

Brother what you have mentioned in general is correct. However there are details. For example a cleaner usually has nothing to do with the haram activities of the business and it is far removed from the business. However something more closely related to the actual haram activity will not be permissible if the business one is working in is not a permissible business.

When it comes to being an accountant or the like in a bank or IT support in insurance company no one seems to find it problematic. However if the same job were being done in a porn or alcohol company - how would one feel?

What if the relative says he is trying / striving hard to change the nature of the job and earn halal income when the opportunity comes. ?

So many of the people are working in Bank jobs because they do not have the option .
May be they are weak , but not having any income will make life more dysfunctional .

Other people who are unemployed for long periods might have no option at the time.
