    Default Female Hafizas

This is a question for the hafizas of SF, or someone who knows of one..

I'm seriously contemplating starting hifz, but I wonder how do you keep up the memorization and revision during the menstrual cycle. From what I understand, we're not allowed to recite the Qur'an during that time, so what do you to keep on track?

    Jazakallah

Asalamu Alaikum, veryy good question, you know I think this is the hardest part of hifdh, I too amd oing hifdh so since you cant read during that time so you start to forget, so what you can do is, get the recitation of any imaam you like, and listen to it continiously but make sure you DO NOT read along with it, you can keep the Mushaf open if that helps, or you can also listen to another hafidhah while they recite in that way you'll be able to revise your own memorisation, then after that time you can continue with your hifdh and revision.

    I hope this helped somewhat....

    ASAWRWB,

The scholars have different opinions on this - some say you can touch the Qur'an if you are a student/memorizing; and some say you cannot. Please see one fataawah below:

    Title

Can a Menstruating Woman Read the Qur’an?

    Question

Dear scholars, As-Salamu `alaykum. If I have my period, is it possible to read the Qur’an without touching the mushaf (book)? Jazakum Allah khayran.

    Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear sister in Islam, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His Sake.

In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

“Scholars and jurists of Islam have been divided in their opinion about the issue whether women who are menstruating are allowed to read the Qur’an or not.

The generally accepted view among them is that women are not allowed to read the Qur’an while menstruating. Among other things, they have based this ruling on a report attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) which states, “Neither those who are sexually defiled nor those who are menstruating shall read the Qur’an.”

A group of scholars belonging to Maliki, Shafi`i and Hanbali schools, and others, however, have rejected the above position. As has been pointed out by Imam Ibn Taymiyah, there is nothing wrong for women to read the Qur’an either from their memory or from the mushaf itself, should they find it necessary to do so.

Even some of those scholars who are generally in favor of disallowing menstruating women from reading the Qur’an from the mushaf have considered it permissible for them to do so if they are teachers or students or they are afraid of forgetting what they have memorized.

Having cited the various views let me conclude by saying:
Should there be dire necessity for you to do so, you are definitely allowed to read the Qur’an, either from your heart or mind, or by holding the Qur’an itself. If there is no such necessity, then you can definitely listen to the Qur’an, for there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever in the sources to indicate that listening to the Qur’an in the state of menstruation is forbidden.

Therefore, you may listen to a recorded Qur’an without any inhibition; you may also read the du`a’s (supplications) from the Qur’an at all times without incurring any sin whatsoever.

May Allah inspire us to see truth as truth and follow it and inspire us to follow it. Ameen.”

Question As-Salamu `alaykum! What is the difference between a fatwa and advice, as fatwas do not have any legal obligations?

Fatwa is a non-binding, legal opinion, while advice is more moral and educational opinion rather than legal counseling. There is a third category called “hukm”, which is a binding verdict issued by a judge.

Question When somebody like yourself gives answers to Muslims asking questions, are you to be judged more strictly than say someone who is more ignorant? We all make mistakes, so are you sometimes afraid or stressed out giving an opinion that may be incorrect?
Answer In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

That is a good question that I need to be asked. In Islamic jurisprudence there is difference between fatwa and hukm. Fatwa is a non-biding opinion on religious issues while hukm is a decision passed by the judge and it is binding. So if people are not comfortable with the fatwa they don't have to follow it. Therefore, since people are not obliged to follow my opinion, that makes it a little bit easier. But in general the mufti has to be cautious and careful about what he says in the name of Islam.

    Assalaamu'alaikum,

So with this inability to read during haidh do you think it takes significantly (or not) longer for females to memorise the Qur'an? I too am trying to learn but it seems my period keeps throwing me off my routine. Listening definitely helps though...
The messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, said: "The servant speaks words, the consequences of which he does not realize, and for which he is sent down into the depths of the Fire further than the distance between the east and the west."

    Sisters;

I'm just beginning but I'm starting to take that time as a blessing because it gives me a chance to just work on and practice what I've already memorized.

I've been getting greedy lately and just want to memorize more and more! Until I worry I might lose some of what I recently learned because I'm working so hard to memorize something new that I don't practice what I've already completed.

So now I just listen and recite as much as I can. Is it ok to read transliteration? I've been doing that at those times if I get stuck and feel unsure. But listening is usually enough.

Here's a link that has recitation with practice intervals after each verse.

May Allah help all of the sisters to complete their hifz quickly and easily. Ameen.

its very important that you study the quran in a mujjawad way. meaning that you do not recite the Quran that you have memorised in a murratal way. once you study in a mujjawad you can work on tone pitch and style. but before that you have to recite in mujjawad
