YUSUFALI: Without adding, "So please Allah!" and call thy Lord to mind when thou forgettest, and say, "I hope that my Lord will guide me ever closer (even) than this to the right road."

PICKTHAL: Except if Allah will. And remember thy Lord when thou forgettest, and say: It may be that my Lord guideth me unto a nearer way of truth than this.

SHAKIR: Unless Allah pleases; and remember your Lord when you forget and say: Maybe my Lord will guide me to a nearer course to the right than this.

    Asalamu 'alaykum,

Islamic philosophy deals mostly with Being (wujud), but recently some Muslim philosophers have also turned their attention to Consciousness (shuhud or wijdan), which is the compliment of Being. What is Consciousness? Consciousness is one of the most difficult things to define because it is an a priori conscious agent who is trying to define something that itself comes before the question "what is consciousness?" In other words consciousness is the very nature of our cognitive and intuitive awareness. There is a Sufi story in which a fish goes to his mother and says to her, "I've heard some of the other children talking about water, but I've never seen water before. What is water?" The mother thought about it for a while and then said, "Show me something that isn't water and I'll tell you what water is." The idea is that consciousness is so pervasive, and so immediate an experience we lack the ability to define it discursively. What we can do is to define it via negativa, or by showing what consciousness isn't. In any event, there is no discussion of what consciousness is without entering into the domain of falsafah or 'irfan.

Shu'ayb, why do you keep bringing Falsafah and 'irfan into the picture when both these movements are not recognized within the majoirty of the Ahl as-Sunnah...

Please make your points clear: what are you trying to get at?

    1. We exist in this world

    2. Allah exists as the miracles of Sayyiduna Muhammad narrated via Tawatur have shown.

    3. The Messenger of Allah informed us of the context of our life, namely that of the hereafter.

    4. We cannot enter Hell, we need to get into heaven.

    5. This is done through leaving the prohibitions and doing the Awamir outwardly and inwardly, thereby attaining the Fadl of Allah and his Rahmah

    Wassalam
