Talking Eid 1430 for UK: Scary stuff!!!

    Asslamo Allaikum,

    1) On Saturday the 19th of September there is a big chance for the moon to be seen in South Africa so “Wifaq Folks ” will go with that sighting and have Eid on Sunday the 20th of September IF the moon is sighted in South Africa

    http://www.islamicmoon.com/

    2) There is ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE for the moon to be seen in Saudia BUT they are still showing Eid on Sunday the 20th of September

    http://www.phys.uu.nl/~vgent/islam/ummalqura.htm

    3) Modernists don’t sight the moon but go with sighting criteria and calculations ONLY & it is likely that will do the Eid on Monday the 21st of September.

    So

    a) If South Africa sight the moon
    b) and Saudees don’t make a mistake &
    c) Modernists don’t change their mind

I will probably be the only one in my city doing Eid on Sunday the 20th of September.

Lets hope & pray that either:

    a) South Africa don’t sight the moon

    OR

    b) Saudees make a mistake

    OR

    c) Modernists change their mind

    Amin...

It is always most probable that we see the moon around two days after it is born though this is not always the case and it is impossible to know for certain as Shaykh Hamza mentions in his papers. Thus the modernists cannot use calculation as a basis for the sighting that the Shari'ah requires. The Saudis sometimes declare Eid before it is possible and that is out of order.

I guess that the most likely day will be Sunday since the moon is born on Friday...

    Why not South Africa? ;-)

    It's a nice place... honest.

I will be making du'aa we in SA sight the moon. It's nice sighting the moon, especially since moonsighting usually falls on gray days.

I think only once since I moved to SA we had a sighting!

Shaykh Afifi al-Akiti of Oxford, who goes and attepts to sight the moon and is extremely well-versed in Shafi'i Fiqh had the following to say about Rajab 1430 when he attempted sighting:

The two of us attempted to perform the sighting of Rajab after Maghrib on Tuesday 23 June (the 29th day of Jumada l-Akhir for the UK). Although the horizon is clear, the crescent could not be sighted. Still, we received news of positive sightings to the East of the UK from Morocco and South Africa. This news, despite not being able to sight locally, makes it sufficient for the day of 1st Rajab to be tomorrow, on Wednesday 24 June, for those in the UK, by following the basic rule [dabit] in Islamic Law in this matter that whenever it is known that the crescent has been positively sighted in the East, local sighting inevitably follows, but not the other way round. Therefore, the 27th of Rajab in the UK should fall on Monday 20 July (beginning from Sunday’s Maghrib).

Because SA is far from UK. Much further away than Morroco. If one doesn't want to follow Saudi becuase its too far from UK, then it'd make sense to follow Morroco.

the reason of not following saudi is not that it is far.. it is because they do not have a credible sighting mechanism in place.. Bhai Muadh post mentions that..

    Salam-wa-Rahmatullah,

I'd be grateful if someone could clarify. I started fasting on Saturday 22nd August as per the guidelines of London Central Mosque (Regents Park). They go by the Saudi sighting mechanism. Was this the correct start date for Ramadhan?

Apologies if my question sounds stupid.
