Default Is music haram in islam?

If so, then how can a 19 year old, like me, get rid of listening to it when I have been listening to it all of my life? Also, does background music in movies or video games counts as me listening to music?

When you get the real taste for the recitation of Quran you will insha Allah voluntarily throw away all your music CDs. ;-)

Music with instruments is not permissible in Islam, except for the "daf" instrument where I heard of difference of opinion among scholars.

1.) Make du'a (!) to Allah Most High to help you in your struggle to end the addiction of music and make the intention to leave it for the sake of Allah.

2.) Stay away from listening to music. Trust me, it won't get better if you continue to listen to it. Sinning only increases the desire of your lower self (nafs) to continue the sin, the only way to effectively stop this desire is to stop the sin itself insha Allah.

3.) There are plenty of halal songs (anasheed) available on youtube and others which are permissible to listen if they don't contain haram like e.g. instruments or depictions of nudity.

Don't despair and rejoice at this rigorously authenticated (saheeh) hadith:

إنك لن تدع شيئا لله عز وجل إلا بدلك الله به ما هو خير لك منه
"Verily, you don't leave something for the sake of Allah 'azza wa jall except that Allah exchanges it with what is better for you than it." (Musnad)

Music is definitely addictive and unfortunately for us no matter where we go, even to buy something from the store, there is music there. When it's out of your control, keep making dhikr and istighfaar.

Anyone who says music is halal is a liar. This has been discussed at length over the years but these addicts just won't listen.

They even come under the garb of beard and sunnah libas like Yusuf "Cat Stevens" Islam.

I've heard a hadith which goes along the lines of listening and being addicted to music to the point of making it halal deems a person a munafiq and they won't be able to recite shahadah at the time of death.

If that isn't enough motivation to throw away those choons or at least attempt to wean oneself slowly off that stuff, I don't know what is.

May Allah forgive us all, and guide us. Ameen.
